Interview with Bernard Gausch
What are your ambitions for your 4th SL season?
Why not do better than last year? If we are spared any injury worries the team will be better than last year. Kevin Walters has targeted a final in the next 3 years. I'm in total agreement.
Especially given that your new recruits seem promising....
Jason Ryles will be our figurehead this season. I've dreamed of signing this player for 4 years. The successor to Alex Chan has a personality that will appeal to the fans. Hard working, courageous, with a strong character. Greenshields, one of his best friends, was our main ambassador in getting his signature. After making the playoffs, signing Ryles was my greatest acheivement.
And Bell to replace Wilson....
Steve is the choice of Mick Potter. To deal with the retirement of Wilson he was the best option. He's a bit more attacking than his predecessor and more capable of breaking the line. He's a former Kangaroo, NRL champion with Manly, in short, behind Gasnier and Cooper, who we also tried to sign, there was no better player on the market. Bell-Mogg was a partnership we have wanted to put together for two years now.
Perry is the least well known of the three....
He played for three years beside Lockyer at the Broncos, which makes him something of a player, no? And as Kevin Walters was his coach at Brisbane, the transfer was made easier. He's a communicator, a real leader. Since Stacey Jones left, he's the leader we've lacked. His arrival will allow Bosc to return to his natural postion and play more freely.
Which player do you think will come through this season?
I'm predicting big things of JP Baile. Even more so now that Raguin's injury will push him to the fore. This season he should be in the 17 for every match. And trade in his "Espoirs" jersey for a full national team call-up. Even more so given his flexibility. He's worked hard these last few months and he needs to be rewarded. I have faith in him.
Will any French Championship players be of interest to you?
There are some who could help us out in tough times. I'm thinking of Mickeal Mercia or Christophe Moly for example. They're not far off Superleague. There's also Julien Rinaldi who could interest us if the cards fell that way.
What sort of relationship do you have with the new coach Kevin Walters?
Potter and Walters are very different. Walters is warmer, more personable. He's from the Gold Coast where people are more Mediteranean. He's closer to the players. The group seems more relaxed this season which is important.
How do you explain all the pre-season injuries?
We've had some health worries and that proves one thing: the players are not machines. The WC wore down the players who were slower to get up and running. We'll see how the early season goes.
Which players will be at the end of their contract at the end of this season?
Croker and Perry. We have 8 foreigners this season and we don't know whether we will be entitled to that many next season, or to 6, as has been suggested. In addition there's the challenge of getting the youngsters we're watching to sign 2 or 3 year contracts. Quintilla, Stacul, Duport, Casty, Baile, Touxagas, the Bentley brothers, Gossard and Raguin will be out of contract.
Who else do you see coming through?
Yoan Tisseyre, Pala, Simon, Vaccari, David Guasch and William Barthau are all with us but I particularly like the big characters of Barthau and Simon when they play for UTC.
Will you lend players to Toulouse at the end of UTC's season?
If they need them and we don't have too many injuries it would be sensible to let them play at Toulouse. We're both in the game of giving the most field-time possible to young French players.
Where are you with the organisation of the Barcelona game for the 21st of June?
We are organising a press conference in Barcelona on Thursday. We're working hard on the event with Liberto Lopez. This match will be one of the biggest days of our existence. The RFL has congratulated us and Warrington have already asked for 4000 tickets. We will try to export Perpignan and its culture to Barcelona.
And the building work at Brutus?
In theory the work will start the 8th of June. Everything is in place with the town hall for the work to start on that date. I'm hoping we can use AimeGiral during USAP's off season. Then, if we have to play at home in the play-offs, we will not have many options outside of Aime Giral.
Have you been consulted by Nicloas Larrat about the choice of national team coach?
Not at all. In my role as the principal supplier to the national team, I think I ought to be consulted. I have some ideas. The national team must put the sport in the spotlight. We have to win back support after a disappointing WC.

Great to hear some of the things in that interview and I agree with him on most things. I've been an advocate of Baile for high honours ever since i saw him debut last year, great player imo.
A final in 3 years? I see no reason why not.
Also glad to hear him giving the juniors encouragement, by what I've heard Barthau has a big future, can't wait to see him play.
I'm excited to by a Dragons fans, alot of good players coming through and better yet they're french.

I watched the game against Warrington this morning...NZ time...6.55am..What a good game that was..The French looked like they were going to get thrashed. At half time the french forwards were unstoppable and that allowed the backs to create good oppurtunities to score...Players who stood out for me were. the whole ream played well, especially the big forwards. I don't knw a lot of the players, but the known ones were outstanding.....Go catalans.

Big things are a foot in France... despite their poor WC showing... where I though it was more Monies inept coaching than anything... the french are starting to get things right. They have recently appinted nicolas Larratt into a full time role to run the LER, the Elite is finally startin to stabilise a bit, Cats have got their stuff sorted and are not only delivering off but also on the field... toulouse, well they will have their teething problems but come 2012 will also be a strong side. Its good to hear that Cats won away, their bad showing at home ysterday had people worried... but looks like they needed a round to break into a stride... they will be there come finals time.

Reading through that they may have the depth to cover Jason Ryles and Sebastian Raguin's injuries

Didn't pick him as a hooker and don;t think he'll spend too much time there. Still looks like he could be a handy replacement in the position while McGuire is out.

I thought he went great at 9 myself, a lot of people were undecided on his best position, maybe its 9?
I also think Ferriol was magnificent after his stint in the bin

come on now Kevin... OK i think it's far enough into the season to say that Walters isn't delivering as a coach, very thin ice imo. Perry at HB? Bird captain instead of someone like Mounis, Mogg or Guisset?

Perry... hmmmm the new John Monie look I always give teams to round 10 before looking to make harsh judgements, cats have a few more rounds to get thing in place IMO.
