2009 CARNEGIE CHALLENGE CUP – FOURTH ROUND PREVIEWS
Friday 3rd April 2009
HALIFAX v WIDNES VIKINGS
HALIFAX will have been encouraged by their 24-14 home defeat of Widnes Vikings in the Co-operative Championship recently. Widnes’s last win at Halifax was 42-22 in 2006 with a draw the best they could do on their next four trips. Halifax’s previous two Challenge Cup-ties against Widnes brought them victories that took them to their last Wembley outings, in 1956 and 1987, winning the trophy in the latter year. And the last time Widnes beat them in the Cup they also went on to Wembley, in 1934.
Previous RL Challenge Cup meetings

HULL KINGSTON ROVERS v CELTIC CRUSADERS
This is only the second meeting between the two clubs, Hull Kingston Rovers having won 48-18 at home in engage Super League a few weeks ago. Celtic Crusaders have yet to beat English professional opposition in the Carnegie Challenge Cup. Since entering the competition for the first time in 2006 they have never progressed beyond the fourth round and their only successes have been against Russia’s Locomotiv Moscow (twice) and Eastmoor amateurs.

SHEFFIELD EAGLES v DEWSBURY RAMS
Sheffield Eagles completed a Co-operative National League One double last season over Dewsbury, who had beaten them twice the year before. But relegated Dewsbury are the in-form team this season with 100 per cent success after seven matches. Dewsbury played in the first Wembley final in 1929, when they lost to Wigan, and have not been back since, while Sheffield lifted the Cup at the stadium with their famous shock defeat of Wigan in 1998.

SWINTON LIONS v ROCHDALE HORNETS
Another close encounter? They have been paired three times in the Challenge Cup and two of the matches have been drawn with Swinton winning the replays. The first was in the Cup’s inaugural year of 1897 and the last 100 years ago. Each had away victories over the other in the Northern Rail Cup last year before Rochdale followed up with a Co-operative League Two home and away double, reaching the half century each time.

WAKEFIELD TRINITY WILDCATS v LEIGH CENTURIONS
Leigh are still seeking a Challenge Cup win over Wakefield since they fought a scoreless draw in the first ever round of the competition back in 1897. They forced another draw in 1947, but Wakefield have won the other six Cup-ties. Leigh, however, won 40-18 at home the last time they met, in Super League in 2005. But their last win at Wakefield was 41-8 back in 1993 in a Stone Bitter Championship (top division) match.

HARLEQUINS RL v HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS
HARLEQUINS RL will be hoping that home advantage will make all the difference after the 46-6 engage Super League defeat at Huddersfield Giants recently. Huddersfield lost 24-0 at Harlequins last year, but completed a League double in 2007 with a 22-10 win there. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Harlequins’ only Cup Final appearance when they lost to Leeds Rhinos in the last rugby league match to be played at the old Wembley Stadium.

WARRINGTON WOLVES v YORK CITY KNIGHTS
It is over 50 years since York won at Warrington. That was a 31-7 League victory at the old Wilderspool Stadium in 1958. York’s last win of all was 14-13 at home in 1981. But meetings have been few and far between since then with Warrington winning all five. York have beaten Warrington only once in seven Challenge Cup-ties, but that was a memorable 15-5 semi-final victory in 1931 that took them to the final and Wembley for the only time, losing to Halifax.

BARROW RAIDERS v WIGAN WARRIORS
The last time these two met was at the beginning of the 1990-91 season that kicked off with the Lancashire Cup and Barrow lost 70-8 in the first round at Wigan when Shaun Edwards scored four tries. Barrow’s last victory over their Cup opponents was back in 1981-82 with an 18-15 win at Wigan completing a League double in the then Slalom Lager Championship, then the top division. The clubs have since drifted apart with Barrow last appearing in the top division in 1989-90 when they finished bottom and Wigan were champions.

BATLEY BULLDOGS v HUNSLET HAWKS
Batley Bulldogs have won the last three meetings between the two clubs, but Hunslet Hawks will be encouraged by their last victory as it was 18-16 at Mount Pleasant in 2007. Hunslet are also defending a 100 per cent success record against Batley in the Challenge Cup, having won all four clashes. The last was in 1965 when Hunslet went on to Wembley and took part in a memorable final before going down to Wigan 20-16. It was Hunslet’s last Cup final appearance.

CATALANS DRAGONS v BRADFORD BULLS
BRADFORD BULLS are aiming for a hat-trick of Cup knockouts against French opposition, including a double over Catalans Dragons. Last season they beat Catalans 46-16 in the fifth round, having thrashed Toulouse 98-6 at the previous stage. Both matches were at home and the latter produced a club record score and winning margin. Catalans are the only French cub to have reached the final, losing 30-8 to St. Helens at Wembley in 2007.
Previous RL Challenge Cup meetings
2008 (5) Bradford 46 Catalans 16
DONCASTER v GATESHEAD THUNDER
GATESHEAD THUNDER gained a Co-operative National League Two double over Doncaster last year, but went down 31-26 at home to be knocked out of the Northern Rail Cup. Neither club has progressed far in the Challenge Cup. Gateshead have never gone beyond the fourth round and Doncaster have never gone further than the sixth round.

FEATHERSTONE ROVERS v WATH BROW HORNETS
Leading grassroots club WATH BROW HORNETS have an impressive record in the Challenge Cup, having beaten professional opposition three times this century. They beat Workington Town 13-12 in 2003, Dewsbury Rams 32-30 in 2005 and London Skolars 14-12 this year. But Featherstone Rovers have usually been far too powerful for amateur teams, having ran up a club record 96-0 win over Castleford Lock Lane in 2004 and gone near to surpassing that this year when they beat the Army 94-2 in the previous round.

HULL FC v SALFORD CITY REDS
HULL FC will be hoping the Cup draw proves to be a lucky omen as they went on to lift the trophy when they beat Salford at the first stage in 1914 and 1982. Both matches, as now, were at home. Recent form is also stacked in Hull’s favour as they have not lost to Salford since a 33-24 Super League away defeat in 2000. Since then Hull have won all 15 meetings. Hull’s home winning run goes back to 1996 after they lost 20-15 at their old Boulevard ground before starting an 11-match victory sequence.

KEIGHLEY COUGARS v CASTLEFORD TIGERS
Their last meeting was also in the Challenge Cup, back in 1994 when Castleford won 52-14 at Keighley in round five. It was Castleford’s sixth successive victory, including two Challenge Cup wins, over this year’s Cup opponents and you have to go back to 1974 for Keighley’s last win. That was a 15-14 home League victory when they were in the top division. Of this season’s fourth round contestants Keighley have gone the longest without reaching the fifth round, making it to round six in 1997.

LEEDS RHINOS v ST. HELENS
This will be the eighth time in ten years that these two teams have met in the Challenge Cup, St. Helens having the edge with four wins to Leeds Rhinos’ three. Saints half back Sean Long is the only player to have played in all the previous seven games, with team-mates Paul Wellens and Keiron Cunningham missing just one. Leeds captain Kevin Sinfield played in all but the first one in 1999. St. Helens won 26-12 at Leeds in engage Super League last year and had a 26-18 home win recently. Of course, Leeds have beaten Saints in the last two Grand Finals and St. Helens have won the Carnegie Challenge Cup in the last three seasons.

Lezignan made their first appearance in the competition last year, winning 37-22 in the third round at Sheffield Eagles before losing 46-6 at Whitehaven. They reached the fourth round this year by winning 18-6 at Workington Town. Eighty years after the Cup Final was first played at Wembley, Oldham are still seeking their first appearance at the stadium.

www.therfl.co.uk/challengecup/news_item.php?id=13607Fifth round draw to take place at RAF base The draw for the fifth round of Carnegie Challenge Cup will take place on Tuesday 7th April at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire with the balls for the draw being flown into the base by a Hawk aircraft. It will go ahead at 2.30pm and special package on the event will be broadcast on the BBC’s regional news programme Look North later that evening. An independent representative of the Press Association will also be present and will electronically “file” the outcome of the draw to all major news organisations immediately after it has been made. Air-Vice Marshall Chris Davison, the Director of the RAF Sports Board will draw the home balls and the away balls will be drawn by former Leeds Rhinos, Great Britain and Ireland star Barrie McDermott. Group Captain Dean Andrew - Chairman of both the RAF Rugby League and the Combined Services Rugby League - will be in attendance as will Warrant Officer Damian Clayton, MBE – the Secretary of RAF Rugby League. Yorkshire born Clayton established the first ever RAF Rugby League team whilst he was based at RAF Leeming in 1994 and the staging of the draw at the base has come about via the close links between the RFL and the Combined Services Rugby League. The draw itself will take place in a hangar which houses the well known Hawk aircraft. Chairman of both the RAF Rugby League and the Combined Services Rugby League Group Captain Dean Andrew commented, “It's massively appropriate for draw to be held at Leeming, the home of the Hawk and the joint services training unit. "The Combined Services had their own cup success last year when Great Britain won the World Cup in Australia so it's fitting that the military is hosting the draw for the fifth round of the prestigious Carnegie Challenge Cup competition."

Was listening to the Fax v Widnes game on radio merseyside through the internet
WOW! What a game. That was like neck and neck, and Widnes were going to the last seconds to get those points. So far I think the match of the round.

How a good a scoreline is that for Barrow, i seem to recall last year Wigan played Whitehaven and beat them by a really large margin. Great crowd too. Glad to see Catalans get a win, maybe another cup run is on the cards, I sure hope so anyway, the last remaining non-english hope and my favorite team.
