OK, while you were asking yourselves what would be the format of the 2009 European competitions, there were some talks about the same thing in the RLEF and among the nations. As far as I heard next year it is going to be organized European Nations Cup in two pools (one: Ireland, Wales, Serbia and two: Scotland, Russia, Lebanon) of the same range. Winners of the pools would obviously (but I don't know yet if it's correct) play final for the title. England and France will play Four Nations, so this should be top European competition next year. Wales coach announced it before everyone, and we should believe him, because he is closer to the source of informations than anyone of us. That's great news! I'd actually thought about that but didn't think it would happen. A big step foward for european RL IMO. Any idea on hosting Spider? will it be one country? home nations? or everyone gets a home game? Also final?

Good news, its the same as the old Euro cup but with Serbia instead of Georgia, its something that should have been continued, so good news.

Nations seeded 9th and lower should have competitions for sure, but I don't know yet what format of them will be. At the end, I'll wait for confirmation of Euro Nations Cup as said above to be certain.
Hosting of this tournament in 2009 is supposed to be one home and one away game for each team, i.e. Serbia should host Wales and travel to Ireland. I don't know for the final, let's wait.

Rugby legaue review also has mentioned next october there will be a "Mediteranean cup" between Malta, Lebanon, Greece and Italy. I am assuming that maybe the Euro shield will be continuesd with Germany, Czechs and Latvia and the bowl be Estonia, Ukraine and Maybe look to get holland into the frame again or even possibly the UAE. Its all looking like Europe is developing nicely... however it dissapoints me that nothing similar is happening in the Pacific.

Malta, Greece, Lebanon and Italy, sounds like Jubilee Oval will host this tournament. Seriously now, Lebanon should play ENC next year and I think the terms are in autumn. Malta will host Scotland Students this October or November, just for promotion of the game, no matches will be played. Italy and Greece, no national conference/championship, very hard.
So, just Sydneyterranean Cup left, but IMO, there are no benefits for European RL out of this kind of competition.

Sonny Radovanovic has been granted a visa to play for Whitehaven this year. So Serbia get one of their players on a pro/semi-pro contract which is great and plays at Championship level (old NL1) so this is fantatsic news in terms of development for the serbian team. This kid is only like 19 years old!

I think Serbia recently joined the EU witing list, which makes visas easier to obtain... I love it the Serbs are able to get them but not the Aussies! Booyaa!
Another comment on the Sydneyaterian Cup... we were saying there is no benefit... I am have thought about it and disagree on that now... I think there will be one benefit... that these teams will make some money out of this tournament, which means that they will be less dependednt on a RLEF hand out, which leaves more money in the kitty for the other Euro teams.
Talking with Tizziano... its certainly the way the Italinas are looking at it, its purely a money making venture.

Isn't it great to see so many "imports" that aren't Australians emigrating into the NL's after the WC. A fair few from PNG and Fiji have been snapped up and it will put them in closer view of SL teams.
