Tonga squad:
Paki Afu - Canterbury Richard Fa'aoso - Newcastle Sam Huihahau - Canberra Toshio Laiseni - Papakura (Auckland) Tevita Leo-Latu - Wakefield Epalahame Lauaki - Hull FC Siuatonga Likiliki - NZ Warriors Pita Maile - Melbourne Willie Manu - Hull FC Viliami Mataka - Wests Tigers Feleti Mateo - Parramatta Eddie Paea - ? Nafe Seluini - NZ Warriors Ukuma Ta'ai - NZ Warriors Joel Taufa'ao - South Sydney Sione Tovo - Newcastle Etuate Uaisele - Parramatta Siosia Vave - Gold Coast Atelea Vea - Cronulla Tony Williams - Manly
Coach: Rohan Smith
Doesn't look as strong as the world cup squad, missing Jennings, Vuna, Kaafusi, & the Paea's up front. Good young side though, if they can keep them together, & most importantly get more regular games then there are some promising signs.

Whilst on my usual look on the Manly site I asked the question had Brent Kite been approached to play for the mate' maa and had various answers. I was hoping the club was going to have a Q and A with Brent and would have asked the question to Brent myself. Would have liked to see him and Willie Mason help out Tonga, who knows they may have rediscovered there love for the game and form ala Jarryd Hayne. As much as I hate seeing Willie playing well he certainingly draws crowds.

The SP Brewery Pacific Cup is set to attract unprecedented radio and television audiences for a Pacific Nations Rugby League tournament with coverage into the UK, Australia and throughout the Pacific. The Pacific Cup will also be broadcast live on internet platforms within Australia from www.NRL.com with Telstra BigPond today confirming it will cover all four tournament matches at Lloyd Robson Oval, Port Moresby. Fans in Australia keen to tune in to the action can do so through the Nine Network, which will broadcast a one-hour package of each weekend’s matches on Sunday November 1 and November 8 at midday. The coverage will extend to British audiences through BSkyB’s Sky Sports in November. Papua New Guinea’s eminent radio broadcaster FM100 will distribute coverage throughout PNG and the Pacific Islands. FM100 will also conduct a live broadcast of this Saturday’s qualifying match between Samoa and Cook Islands at Barlow Park in Cairns, which is set to attract up to 7,000 local fans. In Papua New Guinea long time league broadcaster EM TV will deliver the coverage terrestrially to more than half of the people of PNG. Fiji TV will broadcast the games in Fiji on its free to air service Fiji One and on its Sky Pacific platform to the rest of the Pacific Region, while arrangements are being made for terrestrial coverage in other Pacific Island nations. RLIF Chairman Mr. Colin Love AM said: “The Pacific nations play an exhilarating brand of Rugby League which television audiences around the world are really going to enjoy. “It’s very encouraging for the tournament to have received such solid support from our broadcast partners. “I know that a lot of fans around the world who were pleasantly surprised by how well these nations performed during the World Cup will be looking forward to seeing these matches.” The four SP Brewery Pacific Cup matches will be held at Lloyd Robson Oval over the weekends of October 24-25 and October 31, with the final to be played on Sunday 1 November. Competing nations are hosts Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga and either Samoa or Cook Islands, who play in Cairns this Saturday in a tournament qualifier at Barlow Park (winner to progress to tournament).

wow , didnt see this one coming at all (cook islands 22 Samoa 20). Samoa have to be the most underperforming team on the international stage given the players available to them.
anyone know the crowd?

Captain Alex Glenn was a late withdrawal from the Cook Islands side which makes their win even more remarkable. Maybe some complacency from the Samoans? They left out Puletua & Meli, not sure where Carmont has gone. Or maybe their preparation was not all it could have been with the recent tsunami, I'm sure a lot of their guys would've had family, friends etc on their minds lately. Either way great result, the Cooks always display great pride, & great crowd, shows there's a bit of interest in this competition.

Thats very true about the players from Samoa having other things on their mind. Playing sport is probably the last thing theyre thinking about at the moment.
Still an amazing achievement by Cook Islands though, 4k is a great crowd IMO for Cook Islands V Samoa.

Geez.... who the hell would've picked this one!?!?
Props to the Cooks!... cometh the hour... cometh the man...
I guess it's welcome to the Pacific Cup Cook Islands!
Still can't believe the result, cos that Samoa side had some real talent... and from what I've read, the Coks were mainly Toyota Cup players...

Yes it was a shock, but good on the Cooks Boys, though they have beatedn the Samoans and Tongans in the past. BUt yeah it was mainly NYC players who played for them, so it shows that there is real talent down in the youth there.

bigpondtv.com/leaguetvWell so far the Cook Islanders are showing that the Samoa win was no fluke. Half time 10-10. Uate showing his goos step and speed again. So far a great game. Some great cut out passing, big hits, though with such a game not surprised there are mistakes. The commentators are frigin halarious, so they want to get their canoes out because its a 15 knot wind... they like to banter each other too. Good fun so far. Crowd looks OK, 2-3000 i would say. I dare say tomorrow will be packed.
