The most mornic, idiotic move that could have been done if played in St Marys.
For the sake of international development this needs to be hosted in a country top promote the sport.
Anymoney this will not be televised either. *shakes head*

Hosting the tournament in PNG would lead to it drawing very large crowds. The only negatives associated with hosting the tournament in PNG is a) the violent crowd-behaviour that PNG RL's matches are known for drawing and b) cost of travel and accommodation.

Agree... you can use these tournaments to allow these countries to learn how to host tournaments, get development of facilities up... eventually leading one day say to hosting a world cup say. Even is they done, they love cming out to see their nations, they are very nationalistic proud people... why deny them the chance?!

The other great thing about hosting the Pacific Cup in PNG is it'll draw a great deal of attention from a) the Papua New Guinean media and b) the PNG Federal Government. As you've mentioned, the people of PNG would take pride in hosting a tournament of this callibre on home soil. We need PNG in the next Four Nations. If they qualify for it then the entire country will anticipate the 2010 series like Australia looked forward to the 2006/07 Ashes series. Imagine the amount of attention it would draw from a) the media and b) local retailers? I'm all for inviting PNG to play in EVERY Four Nations tournament because it'll kill off rugby union and Australian rules football in PNG!

In RL, we still havent learnt how to hit and promote the sport on all fronts.
If you go on the TRL and rleaguue forums, everyone looks at these tournaments form a very narrow field of view, oh money wont be made if hosted here and there because its a small country etc... which is rubbish, if you sell the product world wide properley the money is made from the tv and sponsorship rights not just ticket sales, in fact if there will be losses on tickets you should be able to absorb that with the sponsorship, that is were most of the moeny is.
Thw WC showed this. 90% of that $5 million was from sponsoship and TV deals. Flog these things over sease and get the money that way.
Case in point... the RFL / IRB and that fucking mundane 6N tournament, they managed to get $200 million for that thing from the BBC and have flogged the TV rights for it at good expense to othere countries not involved like Russia and the eastern block. Why, that is where the money is. They know they loose big time on tickets as most of them are given away as corporate freebies... its a fucking smart tactic from Union and I suspect soccer... basically give tickets aay for free, you make loses there, but you hit up the major sponsor and TV partners like BBC and RBS for hundreds of millions to help cover that. Stadiums look full, sport looks to make a profit and other sponsors look at Oh shit we shoudl jump on this and they do.
Its akin to sleeping with the devil... but fuck, sometimes you need to. You need to be selfish in order to be selfless sometimes.

You need to be selfish in order to be selfless sometimes. Very good insight. People love to see pictures from exotic areas of the world. Countries like Fiji, PNG, Samoa and Tonga are exotic. Covering a rugby league tournament that is held in these countries allows broadcasters to add an exotic theme to it. For example, they can regularly show pictures of the players swimming in the ocean, playing in the sand, eating kebabs on a stick while they wear beach shirts and throwing a football around with the locals. The money that can be collected from advertising is huge. Holiday resorts from these countries can use the tournament to advertise their product to a global audience. Imagine the amount of money the RFL could bring in from this? In conclusion, hosting tournaments in the South Pacific and adding an exotic theme to them is a great way to promote a) the game and b) the smaller countries from the South Pacific.

and it also promotes good will between these smaller and pooere nations with the sport. A one off tournament is ideal, not these silly notions of having NRL bids for teams.

Yes, that is the goal. PNG has a Union team, that's bad enough, and Aussie Rules, pfft, the name of the game is Aussie Rules. So AFL I don't really mind about, however in PNG it is an issue, and I'd say Union is only a minor issue, because PNG is hardly of the calibre of higher tier nations so it'll never get a higher profile if they only play Uzbekistan and other lower ranked nations. But in league every year PNG plays the PM's XIII, combine that with the Pacific Cup and bye bye Union.
I'm excited for this competition.

I have a feeling iot will be a melanesian final as well. Mmm, well Fiji and PNG for sure will be there, I think Samoa and Tonga and even the Cooks have the potential, but they just won't be as good as the Papua New Guineans and Fijians yet (well, based on the World Cup).

Look it really is hard to know... in terms of local talent all the teams are right up there, but I think PNG have it over everyone else in terms of ESL and NRL players.... but who knows. At least the 4N will have various flavours to it which is good.
