Its a 67k stadium with 30k in there... I didnt see the games , but others were saying it looked OK on TV. Be interesting to see todays games, 8 teams and some of the more popular ones, the two Hull sides, Cats, Celtic , Leeds and Warrington: Plus its a long weekend on monday so many would be making the trip for sunday and making a big day of it. I'd say 40k for todays matches.

It is a fantastic concept, I would love the opportunity to go to one. It wouldnt be a half bad idea to replicate it here in Australia.

Looks like Newcastle are interested in hosting it in 2011. timesonline.typepad.com/rugby_league/2009/05/my-entry.html#moreAgree its a great concept, apparently its worth about 10 million piunds to the local economy, i.e. $20 million Aus, over 2 days! If in australia where would you try and host such a concpet, keeping in mind that its ment for expansion and to promote the sport, so that rules NSW and QLD out effectvely. A Melbourne Magic at etn telstra dome? Adelaide Magic at the oval? WACA magic in Perth?

I believe the WACA in Perth would be an ideal venue to hold such an event. They have a good following of league there already. I think itd sell out both days easily. You would get plenty of East Coasters making the trip over too. I think it would be a very appealing concept to the state government. I think it has the potential to spread the game, and at the same time earn some serious revenue from bidding states.
Whats the chances of it happening in France in the years to come?.

Well the LER already has its own version of the magic weekend, I went to the one last december in Carcassonne. But I think if in Paris or Marseille then it might work. It will be interesting to see how the barca game goes in a few weeks, that could be a possible future venue for a Barcelona Magic... has a nice ring to it... So Venues i think could work for this type of thing: * Cardiff - Success * Edinburgh - Success * Newcastle - Rumours of a bid for 2011/2012 * Dublin - I dont see why not, with rumours a Ch1 team will be in there in the enxt few years. * Paris - I think would be very popular and easy to get to. * Barcelona - Another possibility see how the wire game goes, very popular with the brits. * Moscow - If the visa laws can get relaxed for the weekend and made cheaper, there is a local interest and many english fans would be willing to go, its cheap to fly over. * Frankfurt - in the middle of the "Rugby" heartlands in Germany, and there are League clubs in and around the areas stretching from Karlsruhe to Cologne and heidelberg... again easy to get too and a big city with good places to go to.

All exciting venues,
But one truly does stand out to me, the thought of "Moscow Magic" to me would be simply brilliant. I think something like that would achieve very widespread media coverage around the world. It would help to show people around the world that RL is indeed popular in more than just a few countries. If it were to ever happen, I dont think I could stop myself from going to see it.

Last years championship final between Manu ans Chelsea was in moscow and the Russian govet took down the visa laws for traveling gfans if the produced a valid game ticket. Basically free entry like in the EU... 2. and Moscow is known to be a great party place. 3. Moscow has 2-3 good RL sides and gets decent local crowds and for their finals pulls usually 5-8k, with the ESL being shown directly on Russian TV now its a prime opportunity to showcase the sport.

Maybe throw Rome in there, has more "rugby" presence than Moscow, Frankfurt or Barcelona. I think Dublin will be next then who knows from there. I think the RFL will want areas like Germany, Catalonia etc to develop a bit more before going there but alot can happen in a few years.

OH of course, I am not saying we have to got o these places right away, of course it would be down the line. In the next 5 years I would be targetting Newcastle, Paris and dublin I think, but we should not rule out the other options down the road.
Yes rome could also be another possibility.... but maybe Padua before that, that is Rugby heartland in Italy and there are two dedicated rugby stadiums in the 20-30k mark around there, plus 3 airports with easy access and Venice only 30mins away by train as the local sight.

I think Dublin will be next then who knows from there. Well as I said, the rumours are that Newcastle are interested for 2011... but Edinburhg have the extension option for 2011 as well. The MW is worth an estimated 10 million pounds to the local economy (~AUD$22 million)... that is over 2 days! That is alot of beer, food and accomodation being consumed and used by 60,000 fans. That is about 170 pounds spent by each fan over the two days... when you think about it, its a prettty good value weekend out!

Its a shame that here in Australia, besides different states in our own country, if we had the same concept up and running there arent really any neighbouring countries that we could take such an event to. It would do well at a Pacific Island nation ,but they just dont have the facilities, amongst other things. Japan would be a nice idea, but I dont think they would get enough support there yet. New Zealand is a genuine option, but besides that I cant think of any.
That said, it would still be an extremely useful tool to get other states in Australia more interested in the game. I know last year when it was held they were bringing up the idea of copying it down here on the Sunday footy show. But they didnt want it for the same reasons as they do over in Europe. They wanted to hold it in Brisbane, just as a big money spinner for some of the struggling NSW teams. For me, it needs to be more about spreading the game to new areas. There is no way an event like this would fail financially in Australia, regardless of where you held it.

Japan I cant see it happeneing, RL fans dont have the kind of money the old boy networks do to travel those distances.... then again the ARU are desperate for $ at the moment. MM is all about promotion of the game. As it is though the ESL clubs basically run at profits, or at worst break even, something the Aus clubs are to do. Why oh why go to brisie I dont know. E3L made an interesting suggestion with Perth and the WACA in a PM... I think that could work as there is a strong Rugby presence there over all and I think eastern fans would be willing to travel there. Have it on a long weekend, why not? I think though having a travelling round to country and non heartland areas might serve better, rather than trials, have full NRL rounds in Perth, Darwin, Wagga etc...
