Jamaica makes Bowl Finals Cheltenham 9s.
Jamaica recorded it's first representative victory by defeating one of the UK's top 8 University teams, Glouchestershire, in the Bowl semi-finals. The reggae ruggers ran out 18-12 winners over a very strong team in an exciting and big hitting encounter.
The boys came up against her Majesty's Army in the finals and were unlucky to fall 12-14 to the big powerful Army team. Greg Johnson scored a last play try that put Jamaica in with a chance to send the finals to over time if the conversion was made. However, the acute angle was too much for kicker Duane Nelson whose effort went wide.
Earlier, Jamaica went down 10-14 to the defending champions,the Royal Navy. The Navy raced to a quick 8 point lead, however, a dominant performance from the Jamaicans in the second half took them to the bring of victory, before the Navy scored a late try to seal victory.
Professional outfit Oldam defeated the Navy in their fixture, therefore Jamaica had to Win against Oldham to top the group. The boys started off surprizingly well and where shock leaders at 14-8 at one point. Oldham came back strong in the second half and the scores were tied at 18 all with time expiring on the clock. An Oldham player chipped a "hail mary" out wide and Jamaica agonizingly knocked on, Oldham recoverd the ball and scored on the final play to steal an undeserving victory.
Jamaica's coach for the day and Development Officer Romeo Monteith was very pleased with the effort of his team;
"Our first team got stuck in Jamaica because of the volcano and we were still putting together a side this morning. To perform at the level we did and actaully secure a first representative victory with a side that never had a proper training, is extremely rewarding. This event has been a success for us, we have been in the West Indian communities of Bristol and schools, to promote this great code and we were warmly received. Jamaica Rugby league can only get stronger and we look forward to our next outing .
The tournament was historic in other ways as well as the father and son pair of Howard "Sonnie" Williams and Alex Williams played along side each other. There was another family pairing between Greg Johnson and Ashley Johnson who are cousins. The two were outstanding on the fringes scoring a total of 7 tries between them. Duane Scott captained the team for the day and Duain Nelson was outstanding at hooker. Other good perormances came from Simeon Daniels, Peter Brady, Christopher Blake, Lewis Ray, Charlie Jones, Romeo Monteith and Matthew Simpson who showed outstanding leadership at scrumhalf. Tommy Richards was the team physio/tranier for the day and kept the boys going in thorughout a gruelling day.
