Jamaicans look forward to Cheltenham 9s.
‘Reggae rugby’ returns to UK shores next month when Jamaica take their place in the Cheltenham Rugby League Nines on April 24th. The side were last here in August when they earned a host of new friends after appearing in the Headingley Carnegie 9s.
Four of the players in that team were from the domestic competition, however, this time around, the number will be nine as the islanders seek to expose more of their best young talent to top class competition as the country prepares for the Rugby League World Cup qualifiers in 2011. JRL Development Officer Romeo Monteith believes participation in events such as the Cheltenham Festival can only aide his nation’s quest to become a force in international Rugby League.
“We must expose our players to the highest standards as often as we can” he said. “The Cheltenham festival will certainly do that as there is a fantastic line up. Our ambition is to be in the World Cup in 2013 and this is another stepping stone to that dream.” Among Jamaica’s opponents will be professional and semi-professional teams from Engage Super League and the Co-operative Championship, as well as the representative sides from the three services of the Armed Forces. The Jamaican side is sponsored by Virgin Atlantic Airways and kit manufacturers Kukri Ltd. The relationship with the airline has significantly boosted the stock of the local game as Monteith acknowledged. “Without this partnership our World Cup ambitions would fail before we begin. Virgin is invaluable to us and we encourage our fans and teams wishing to tour Jamaica to use the Airline.” Mike Atkins of Kukri will be at the festival to witness the progress of the reggae boys. “We will be working hard to get Jamaica merchandise on the shelves of Rugby suppliers worldwide to further spread the word of how hard they are working to put together a team with a genuine chance of playing in the 2013 World Cup”.Cheltenham Festival Tournament Director Neal Coupland welcomed the inclusion of such exotic visitors. “The historic festival town of Cheltenham awaits with relish the arrival of the Jamaican Rugby League team” he commented. “Their spirit of adventure emulates the great pioneers from New Zealand who played here in 1908 and gave birth to International Rugby League as we know it today. We wish similar great things for Jamaica”
The local based players are scheduled to leave Jamaica on April 19th a week later.
The squad is:
