The Axemen are proud and excited to have three players named on the USA team and a forth put on stand-by in case of injury or illness. The three confirmed players have been with the team since the inaugural season and two are former UNF Graduates - UNF Graduates and former UNF Rugby players, brothers Apple and Taco Pope have joined utility player Bob Knoepfel as the three Axemen who have been confirmed on the USA team that will play Jamaica at Hodges Stadium on November 14. Matt Clark who joined the Axemen from Montana and is also a member of the Jacksonville Mens Rugby Union team has been asked to continue is training preparations in the event of injury or sickness rules out any of the current confirmed USA players.
All four of the Axemen players have been taking part in special preparation training sessions with Axemen founder Spinner Howland to make sure they are ready for the level of play they are going to need to perform at during this game. "Being selected to represent your country is a great honor but only a small part of being a member of the team", Spinner said. "At this level you need to play the best game of your life every time and there is no room for guys who are not prepared to do what it takes to be ready. These are the best Rugby League players in the USA and they play every game at a very intense level. I am certain the Axemen guys are going to be some of the best prepared players on the team after the weeks of training they have been putting in."
The Axemen team is very excited that after only four years of existence they have had guys selected to the biggest honor any athlete can achieve in playing for their country. They are asking all the Axemen fans and supporters to join in congratulating Apple, Taco, Bob and Matt and encourage you to support them from the stands on game-day.
WJCT Electro Lounge Welcomes the Rugby League Atlantic Cup to Jacksonville as host David Luckin provides great music for both teams, fans and supporters at Fionn MacCools Irish Pub on Friday Nov 13 - David Luckin who is the host of the Electro Lounge that airs on WJCT in their after hours programming will host a "Welcome to Jacksonville Mixer" on Friday November 13 staring at 6.30pm upstairs at Fionn MacCools in Jacksonville Beach.
The event will be attended by both teams and is open to the public to come and meet the players, take pictures and relax in a social atmosphere on the eve of the big game. These are the best Rugby League Athletes in the USA and Jamaica yet they are some of the most humble and approachable men on the planet. They love the opportunity to meet fans and know a bit about the people who are cheering them on in the stands.
This event continues to show the support that all of Jacksonville has for the sport of Rugby League and the Axemen are hoping that all their fans come and help WJCT welcome the best players from the USA and Jamaica to the city in true Axemen fashion. It is sort of like a gladiator preview to pick the one you are going to cheer for in the battle."
