School rugby gets dusted off the parkSteve Spinks | 24th September 2009 Source: Northernstar.com.auTHE dust storm that engulfed Australia's eastern seaboard yesterday forced the cancellation of a schoolboy rugby union carnival at St John's College, Woodlawn. More than 300 students were forced to travel home without completing a game after organisers of the Australian Rugby Union St John's College Woodlawn All Schools Secondary Rugby Carnival heeded health warnings. “We played about two games but then we received a directive from the Department of Health regarding outdoor activities so we thought it was in the best interests of the kids not to go ahead,” ARU North Coast development manager Bruce Frame said. “It was disappointing for the kids and for myself. “There were 300 kids itching to play but it's just one of those things. “Of all the things to happen. I've been involved in gala days previously and I don't think I've ever cancelled any-thing due to dust. “It was a heart-wrenching decision to make but in the end we made it and it was the right thing to do.” Part of the gala day included four girls' sides playing Tens style rugby union. “Part of pushing the women's side of the game is that we expect it to be included in the 2016 Olympics. So that's really exciting,” Frame said. Schools attending included Lindisfarne, Evans Head and west to Casino and Kyogle.
