It seems like only yesterday that we were previewing the 2009 American National Rugby League season, but in fact it was three months ago and now we’ve reached the eve of Championship Final XII.
Pier 40 in Manhattan on Saturday night is where and when a new champion will be crowned in our Game of the Week.
The home town New York Knights will face the Jacksonville Axemen in what promises to be a real humdinger of a Grand Final.
The Axemen will bring a perfect 9-0 record to the big apple, while the Knights will take an impressive 8-1 mark into the big game.
New York’s solitary loss was a 28-18 defeat by the very same Jacksonville side back in June, but our Rugby League Guru suggests that result should be thrown out the window as the Knights were slightly underdone having traveled to Florida with a light squad.
In one of the most interesting and perhaps most telling duels on the night, New York’s young halfback Luke Hume will be up against Jacksonville’s wily Brent Shorten.
Both Australians have been in scintillating form all season long - each has scored a multitude of tries while setting up many more for their teammates.
Both are adept at running from dummy half, each can torch the opposition for long-range scores and both are solid on defense.
New York and Jacksonville also boast several other game breakers respectively including Knights Gareth Baxendale, Matt Astill and John Meoli and Axemen Simon Moate, Craig Howitt and Kenny Britt.
And for the record, Guru is tipping a close one with Jacksonville emerging victorious by 24-22 in a very tight defensive oriented match.
Championship Final XII represents the first time in the league’s history that the Aston Bulls, formerly the Glen Mills Bulls, won’t be playing for a title after they were disqualified in the quarterfinals for fielding an ineligible player.
The Knights have been in one championship decider back in 2002 when they beat the Bulls to claim the AMNRL crown. Jacksonville, which was established in 2006, is making its debut appearance in a Grand Final.
The action is set to kick off at 7p (EST) at ‘The Castle’, but if you can’t be there you can follow the game’s progress on both the Knights’ and Axemen websites by clicking on the links to Twitter.
We will have a recap of what transpired later in the night so make sure to check back right here at ARN to get the skinny on who becomes the 2009 AMNRL champion.
