another disapointing round for the a-league. i think soccer's a great alternative to league, gives us something else to watch in the off season. however, these figures show its not the off season yet.
adelaide v Gold Coast- Hindmarsh stadium adelaide: 12,741 central coast v sydney- bluetonge stadium central coast: 10,029 nth qld v melbourne- dairy farmers stadium townsville: 6,514 brisbane v wellington- suncorp stadium brisbane: 7,514 perth v newcastle- members equity stadium perth- 9,598
round average: 9,279

North QLD was always a bad choice IMO, Townsville only has 170,000 people and in Rugby League mad, I doubted they would embrace Soccer and it looks like I was right. The Fury even advertise on Rocky radio, and Rocky is 700kms away! If i was going to travel 700kms it wouldn't be to a soccer game.

As an aside I enjoyed the Perth V Newcastle game.
I love the perth ground, the noise and atmosphere made by 10k people is like you would find in the UK, loved it.

Do you thik the end of the League season will make much difference Sportsmad? What about when the cricket wraps up in aus? When do AFL and RU have their seasons S14 is on now right? one of the things the a-league has on its side is theres a lot of holidays to promote their matches around. this will bring the overall crowd avergage up. once the AFL and NRL are over i think crowds will increase by about 25%. the afl grand final is on september 26 and the super 14 finished on the 30th may (although super 14 isnt really a blip on the radar and regularly gets out-rated by the under 20's toyota cup on fox sports). i once atteneded a nsw waratahs super 14 match and was shocked to pay $50 for a seat. i think the club needs to look at this. do you know how many beers at the pub that is! cricket and soccer are no threat to each other as they are totally different. people go to soccer for 90 minutes of an exciting game (theoretically) whilst people that go to the cricket are prepared to spend the whole day there. melbourne victory is the club that will see the sharpest incline IMO. if im wrong then the a-league is in more trouble than i thought. the a-league is remarkably similar to the japanese league (j-league) which started back in 1993. for anyway interested ive posted a small snipet of info about it.

AFL Runs Parrallel with the NRL and S14 has already wrapped up... they are into the internationals now, the tri nations etc... which dont compete really with the NRL at all. Vricket season start end of October with the domestic stuff but that is not as popular so till the one dayers and test start in November the soccer has maybe a 1-2 month wondow where it crowds may pick up a bit.

QSAC is 48k and has a running track. anything under 20,000 looks utterly ridiculous at suncorp, 7k looked laugable. Lucky you , my nearest NRL team is 7 hours drive away, my favorite team is 8 hours and Sydney is about 17 hours. That's hwere planes come in handy I suppose ;D

Yes they would... their attitude is not to allow anyother low life sport use the stadium... though its black hole at the moment using up QRU funds and brings nothing in...... so you never know maybe... but its in a shit location... its hard to get too anyway bad Public transport etc... I quite like QE2... I dont know why people have anything against the old girl... people and their hang up about running tracks. If it were upto me, if I were to have a 4th QLD team then it would be somehere in the Gympie area, help cover that sunshine coast upto Mackay and Rocky area.

The Roar got 6,500 for the game against the Mariners today.
Actually Dan for a fourth Qld team in the NRL I would like to see a Northern Brisbane one with Redcliffe, Norths, Valleys and Sunshine Coast feeding into them. That should signifcantly weaken the Broncos

People who say the A-League will catch the NRL are really just kidding themselves. True. Football (soccer) will never overtake rugby league in Australia.
