England players to benefit from greater sports scienceSource: TheRFL.co.ukEngland’s top internationals will benefit from better preparation and performance plans under new proposals agreed by the RFL and Super League clubs. The proposals will see a group of between 25 and 30 elite players benefit from better sports science and medicine each year. This will include players being screened and monitored at least four times per year by international sport science staff and players benefiting from individualised performance plans. These will be agreed between the England Head Coach and player’s Club Coach. Tony Smith, England Head Coach, said: “A number of players have cited burn out and a lack of sports science in their preparation as reasons why England did not perform as expected at the World Cup. “These issues need addressing and our aim is to deliver a targeted five year performance programme with world leading standards to produce world class players for the 2013 World Cup which we hope to stage in this country. “Going forward the national side would also benefit from more time together to train and prepare for international matches in order to develop and practice systems of play. This is something we are working on with clubs to achieve.” At the meeting the RFL and clubs also discussed what measures could be taken longer term to reduce player burn–out and whether this could be achieved through a longer pre-season for international players and a limit to the number of games top players can take part in.
