Rugby League takes off

RUGBY league is gaining momentum with the first ever rugby league game played over the weekend.

This was between West Honiara and a combined Central and East Honiara.

AFP Officer Darren, who officiated the first quarter, was impressed with the boys’ performance, considering the new status of the code.

Solomon Islands Rugby League (SIRL) President William Tuhaika said the main purpose of the game was to help the SIRL officials select a national side to play the exhibition game in July.

“At least two technical people from Australian Rugby League (ARL) will come over to help prepare the national side for this proposed historic event,” Tuhaika said.

“The SIRL executive is looking at kicking off the Honiara League after the launching and interested clubs will be invited,” he said.

The executive strongly encourages interested players from East Honiara to join this coming weekend on Sunday at 2 pm in King George rugby oval.

This is also a call to qualified referees, coaches and technical people who are in town to come and help with this initiative.

Honiara Rugby League Delayed.

THE first ever proposed Honiara League competition scheduled to kick off this month has been delayed because the uniform were yet to arrive from Australia.

President of the Solomon Islands Rugby League (SIRL) William Tuhaika said his executive is waiting for the sets of uniforms that are on their way from Australia.

The Australian Rugby League Foundation sponsors the sets of uniforms.

Tuhaika said the International Manager of Australia Rugby League (ARL) who has been very supportive to introduce the new code in the country relayed this.

He acknowledged the Australian Rugby League Foundation for supporting this new initiative.

He said the proposed HRL competition is purposely to enable players to experience the game more and to select a National side for the Exhibition game in October later in the year.

Four teams - West Honiara, East Honiara, Central Honiara and the Honiara Nationals – will participate in the competition.

Player’s registration still continues and players who are interested are encouraged to come to King George rugby oval every 5pm on Wednesdays and 2pm on Sundays.

SIRL has two volunteers from Australia who serve under the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) who are helping out.

“This is a great opportunity for players to learn more of the skills and laws of the game,” he said.

Tuhaika added that players who are keen to play must be prepared mentally and physically to contest the New South Wales Police because they are highly skilled and experienced.

“You must be prepared to play against some of the high class rugby league players during the Exhibition Game.”

The ARL Officer, Tas Baitieri will also pay a visit to the SIRL Executive within the next few weeks on his way to Port Moresby, PNG for the Pacific Cup.

Tuhaika said it will be an opportunity for the SIRL Executive to meet and discuss rugby league related issues with the highest Officer of the ARL.

He said the SIRL Executive is working closely with Mr Baitieri to join the Pacific Cup in the near future.

Don't know of any current guys in the NRL or ESL... but I am trying to find stuff out, my cousins in the sollies at the moment and he will chat to the sports minister about it he said.
