Fresh from winning the Carnegie World Club Challenge on Sunday, Scotland and Manly Sea Eagles Rugby League star Michael Robertson believes engage Super League’s Magic Weekend (2-3 May) at Murrayfield will give the game a boost in his adopted country and revealed his family are now retracing their roots.
Despite being born and raised in Australia, current NRL champion Robertson represented Scotland at the last World Cup in November 2008 and helped the Bravehearts achieve their first ever Finals win over Fiji.
Now the 25-year-old says having engage Super League action on their doorstep will help to find the next generation of Scottish talent.
Robertson said: “Everyone gets keen on the Super League over in Australia. When you’ve got every team in the same stadium over the same weekend, it is something for everyone to get excited about.
“I think it will be a really big step for Scottish Rugby League. To have the best Super League players at Murrayfield will help to grow the game in Scotland and hopefully it will get a few more people playing the game.”
After qualifying for Scotland through his Dundee-born grandfather, Robertson says he was proud to wear the navy blue and that his family were joining the ‘Homecoming’ celebrations by visiting the country after the match.
But revealed he was devastated to not be able to join them because of his hectic schedule.
He added: “For me, playing for Scotland was about representing my heritage and my family – I recognise where they come from.
“I was very proud to have played in a World Cup and to have helped Scotland win a game in a World Cup was fantastic.
“My grandfather was from Dundee, but I haven’t been there. My family came over to watch me play in the World Club Challenge and now they’ve gone to Scotland for a few days.
“They are checking it out and seeing what Scotland is all about.
“I would have loved to go as well, but it’s tough on this trip because the schedule is pretty hectic. It will be tough, but it is something I’ll try and book into my schedule at one stage.”
Tickets for the Magic Weekend (priced at £50, £40 or £25 for Adults or £20, £15 and £10 for concessions (under-17s, OAPS or students)) are on sale now via the RFL Box Office on 0871 226 13 13 or via www.rugbyleaguetickets.co.uk
