So... It's snowing, and have some RLWC replays on one TV and SoO on the other... I have a beer and my home still, and so have got to thinking about things again........
So as many are aware there is an issue about player fatigue, too many rounds etc... versus TV exposuer and money that needs to come into the game. Now many on here know how much I love the cup concept and I often woow the decision to kill off the Australian Cup comps i.e. the Tooths/Amco/Panasonic and Wills cups.
Now one thing that motivates teams and players is the fact to play for trophies... for something worthwhile... I feel that despite the NRL being the 'top' competition in the world, it is in need of something extra... a cup comp... but how can this be done without there being put too much extra pressure on the players and also not eating into the domestic competition with TV money.
So as it stands the NRL:
~3 weeks of Pre season games (which are fucking pointless in current form)
26 Regular rounds
04 Play off rounds
So there are basically 33-35 weeks of playing these guys do. So how do you bring in a Cup comp. So lets keep this figure as what we want to keep.
So many on here laso know that I think that the preseason games need to count for something more... and they can be used to take the game on the road and show case it. So here is what I have been thinking.
So use the old midweek cup concept of having teams play in groups initially before going into the knockout stage, similar to the NRC in the UK actually. Thus four groups of four... this gives us three rounds pre the main season. The top two teams in each group go into a quarter finals, semi finals and final. These three rounds can then be dispersed through the rest of the regular season.
... Now then you have the main NRL comp come in. So I am thinking that we only really need what the NFL have all teams play each other once, thus there are 15 rounds. I would then add say some extra rounds that work around major rivalries and local derbys.
Now then throw in 4 weeks or rep footy, so the city/country and SoO... with no NRL rounds, thus to make up the TV viewing internationals can be run as well with the PI teams
Cup Comp - 06
NRL Comp - 21
Play offs - 03
Rep Comp - 04
------------------
Total - 34
So this brings us to what we were aiming for, with three major trophies for clubs to aim for and also have inetrnational promoted. I think the WCC will need to be revamped in some way though, to allow the aussie teams to travel, I am thinking it would be prudent to have it on the road and around the new years day time to avoid conflict for both hemispheres with games.
Anyway these are just my random thoughts... if anyone cares to add something then go for it.
