and the media is setting them upto fail.
The negative press and comments is used to drive the negative mentality into the sharks fans.
EXACTLY the same thing was done to Souths, norths and wests in 2000... I remember is well... like yesterday.... it took 80,000 people to march and block the streets of sydney to stick it to the media moguls... and yet we havent learnt anything from that.
Mark my words. Let the sharks die and you open up a whole pandoras box for other teams to go the same way.

But the NRL fails without the media. What do you think is more important? I know what Gallop and co. would be thinking.

If manl or Sts were staring down the barrel, I would go and march with them... even though I hate them. They are traditionalk rival teams, its that rivalry and 'hatred' that keeps the game alive. Look at the local derby, 20k! It was more than what the Dragon v Doggie got and they touted that as the 'biggest game'. The derbies draw massive crowds and are the life blood of our sport, its the tribalism and feuds that drive us... not some rubbish concosted in the smoke filled back rooms of Packers and murdochs garrage. One massive problem we have in Australia and Sydney especially is that alot of people aren't fans of RL, they are fans of an NRL club and a State Of Origin team. That is the sad fact I'm afraid. These are the people that call the WC a joke although if they knew anything about RL they would know a sucessful WC is vital to the game's survival and growth. They couldn't care though as long as they can watch their beloved NRL club play next season.

Youd think they would have learnt their lesson by now... if they allow this, they will have another souths and Nths on their hands and will have to fight tooth and nail to get fans back. There will be a backlash.

Yes , its the way the medi has portrayed RL.... look in aus they will think that RL was started in Aus, not in England. Look at the way the WC was marketed. This is why the media needs to be brought in line and made accountable. They are the Hitlers of RL!

i can definately understand what your saying about the history of a club, the local derbies etc... howerver the way i see it is that the 16th spot that the sharks would free up if they were to actually fold could be taken up by an area with a bigger future than the shire. that being the central coast. the local derby is only one home game per year and the sharks fail to attract crowds for every other home game. im not saying the saints sharks derby can be replaced but imagine a central coast newscastle derby. it would be a huge derby in years to come , just as big as gold coast/ broncos is starting to be.
the bears came out last week stating that they are prepared to have a team on the firld by 2011 in case the sharks fold and the nrl voids its contract of not providing 8 games per week. tony zapia said a few days ago that the sharks had 18 months. although this is perfect timing so to speak i dont think its in the best interest of the game if the sharks fall over by the the next tv deal (2012)

Its just that they are flavour of the month to take shots at.

i dont miss your point. i see how the media seems to be egging on the demise of sydney teams amongst other issues u mentioned. we must also blame the sharks fans and their apathy. also how many loyal players are left in the game today? its not a high percentage. a collapsed team can never be a clean cut with fans just moving onto another team. in 20 years time though, its possible that it might have been for the best though....

Look... if Gyer makes it into the NRL or somweher in RL... say buy buy all sydney teams... he is the advocae for 4 teams, Northern Sydney, Southern Sydney, western Sydney and Estern sydney. Fan apathy is all through the NRL... they always have been. When a team does shit they leave, the doggies saw this last year, their crowds dropped. If the sharks were winning and pulling in 15k a week people wouldnt say a thing... if this was something happening for 20-25 years maybe a case would be there, but it isnt, teams fortunes fluctuate and as I said only 5 years ago it was sharks with the est crowds and wests and bunnies and sts with pathetic crowds. Why arent anyone having pot shots at easts at the moment, they have just as many problems with discipline, bad crowds... why because they got a rich guy that knows how to pay people off.

yeah everyone loves a winner. its a chain effect. no one like to go to games with no atmosphere and if theres no one there theres probably going to be no atmosphere.

Even with 9k it generated good atmosphere and those 9k are probably the most loyal and dogged fans going round. If I was back in sydney Id be there evry game as well! I remember when the bunnies and wests, melbourne were getting crowds of 6k just a few years ago.

Marv has done this a few times with Cumbrian games. Warriors and Sharks games tend to have a good turn out, they ave a bit of a rivalry going since 2001.
