haha the sea eagles are actually my local team now that the bears are gone. i dont hate them but i know a lot of people that do. TBH i think theyre really boring. theyre just a boring club. im not saying id prefer to see it scandle ridden but for a team thats the defending premiers you certainly dont hear much about them. they prefer to keep a low profile. im not sure if they put a lot of media bans on their players or whatever it is..... Thats just Dessie's influence at the club give the opposition teams no ammo to play against you. Also give the Media nothing as well. I was thinking the same thing the other day everyone seems to forget that Manly are the defending premiers.

theres pro and cons to that though. if coaches got their way everytime the game would never be promoted and players would be completely closed off. it may not give teams ammo when they play against them but it also makes it very hard to find sponsorship and with them playing at crookvale park they need all the sponsorship they can get. i think russell crow pointed out just how undervalued sponsorhip on an NRL jersey really is. the name of the company on the front or back of a jersey is flashed on the tv thousands of times a year and a full 90 minutes when games are televised. imagine if they had to pay that length of time in ads. souths put there foot down last year and said $2m is our starting offer. delongi became their back of jersey sponsor and NAB the front(perhaps swapped round on away jerseys). im pretty ssure the broncos would charge a little more than average $1m aswell. when i heard the sharks only got $700k per season (probly less now) i just shook my head. once again , selling ourselves short.
anyway, onto this weekends awesome matchups. i predict melboutne to beat manly , titans to beat broncos, newcastle to beat dogs and dragons to beat eels. i will probably eat my words in a couple of days though

Stumbled upon Shane Webke's second book "Hard Road" at the library this week (didn't know he had a new one).
It's a good thought-provoking read & he touches on some issues of great interest to users of this board. Administration, expansion, bush league, rules, etc.

what does he say about expansion?
eels have set up a showdown with the dogs next friday night at ANZ stadium. papers are reporting today that officals are hoping for a crowd of 80,000 people for the match. would be wonderful if they got that

Then have another 80,000+ for the final.

I agree unless there is some one handing out free tickets at the "G". I think we will struggle to get 20,000 there as its the same day as one of the gAyFL grand finals is on. Its a shame that Parra have to play the dogs for a spot in the grandfinal instead of the actual grand final, Sydney would come alive if these teams were playing each other in the big one.

the storm have almost 10k members and according to rleague.com there has been pretty good demand from members. add to that this game will have been somewhat known for 2 weeks and its against a great rival in the dragons or an arch rival in the broncos i think 25k is a reasonable expectation. if it wasnt on afl grand final weekend a 40k would have been do-able.
parra v dogs is a huge rivalry that will occupy all the backpages and some frontpages in the city of sydney for a week. judging on this year though i think the rivaly with the dragons is a little bigger. just the way the last game at kogarah ended and the hatred between the two supporter bases..... if dragons play dogs in the grand final sydney will holt to a standstill. TBH i cant see anyone beating melbourne though. theyre my tip. anyway , im off to the pub to watch the big game tonight.

Parra's mine this year. They are playing like Manly was last year where no team could touch them.
I'm thinking a Storm vs Parra grand final

ticket update for this weekends two preliminary finals in melbourne and sydney as of tuesday morning (before general public tickets went on sale for the sydney blockbuster)
ticketed members of both parramatta els and the bulldogs help to break the first day members sales record, even beating any grandfinal demand from members. together members of the two clubs snapped up more than 12,000 tickets in the alloted hours. 49% to bulldogs members and 51% to eels members.
More than 14,000 tickets have also been sold for Saturday night’s Preliminary Final between the Storm and Brisbane Broncos at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium, with tickets having been on sale since late last week. an open letter to all victorian sports fans will be published by cameron smith today pleading with fans to come and enjoy a game of league straight after the big final in the AFL. CEO Brian Waldron is optomistic for a crowd of between 30,000 and 40,000
