Brent Sherwin’s 77th-minute drop goal brought Hull FC’s perfect start to the new season to an abrupt end as Castleford Tigers turned the form book upside down at the KC Stadium.

Richard Agar’s side appeared to be on course for a sixth win in six matches after four tries shared between the Horne brothers Richard and Graeme had given them an 18-12 lead.

But with the usually reliable Danny Tickle failing with three of his four conversion attempts, Castleford were never out of the game and Ryan McGoldrick’s try, coupled with Sherwin’s drop goal, earned them the win.

It was credit to Terry Matterson’s men that they secured a fourth win of the campaign but Agar will surely look upon this as two points dropped in his side’s bid to banish the memories of their awful season in 2008, when they finished second bottom, one place above Castleford.

Having won at Bradford for just the second time in the Super League era last weekend, Hull started brightly with a try in the opening minute from Richard Horne but were soon pegged back and only led at the interval after a score from Graeme Horne.

All three tries in an enterprising first half came from errors fielding high kicks and Richard Horne was the first to capitalise.

Ex-Hull winger Kirk Dixon made a mess of taking in Chris Thorman’s bomb and in the ensuing melee, Richard Horne reacted the quickest to poach his fifth try of the year on his 250th appearance for the club.

Tickle converted but Dixon was soon able to make amends with a six-point haul after taking in a James Evans pass to ground in the corner after Craig Hall had flapped at Rangi Chase’s towering punt. Dixon converted from the touchline.

Hull’s ball retention belied their league position and they were lucky to be level after Michael Shenton failed to hold the ball with the line at his mercy after McGoldrick crafted an opening for him.

Hull capitalised on their good fortune and went back in front on 20 minutes.

Richard Owen was the culprit under a high ball this time, failing to clean up another Thorman kick, with Graeme Horne on hand to kick ahead to score.

Tickle’s failed goal and Hall’s failure to make the most of an empty field ahead of him meant Hull went in at the break with a fragile 10-6 lead.

That advantage was shattered soon after the interval as a combination of Joe Westerman’s try and Dixon’s goal snuck the visitors ahead for the first time.

Westerman’s third try of the season, five minutes after the restart, came off a fine flat pass from Chase, but Castleford’s lead only lasted four minutes as Hull struck back.

Graeme Horne was the scorer again, although he did need two attempts to touch down under the attentions of Shenton.

Tickle hit the top of the post with his conversion but it did not seem to matter when the younger Horne secured his hat-trick two days shy of his 24th birthday after good work from Shaun Berrigan.

But with Tickle again failing to convert the scores were left at 18-12 and that was quickly addressed as McGoldrick ran in on an angle to score for the visitors, with a third Dixon goal levelling the scores.

Richard Horne then failed with a 67th-minute drop goal, as did Sherwin five minutes later, before the wily Australian found his aim three minutes from time.

I heard it was a pearler of a match... akin to the Newcastle Brisi match of a few weeks ago or something.

Poeple saying its the best game of the ESL so far.

But an even bigger game tonight. Toulouse Olympique vs. Barrow Raiders!

The Castleford Tigers new stadium project has taken another important step forward in turning its plans into reality with the completion of a detailed draft design brief, including a schedule of the facilities to be included in the new stadium. The club will be meeting with Waystone and Wakefield MDC representatives in the next few weeks to discuss and finalise the documents.

Tigers CEO Richard Wright said: “The design brief and schedule of facilities documents are important working documents that will now provide the basis upon which we can go forward and ultimately design and build the stadium. Whilst we have known for sometime the broad outline of what the new stadium will look like, together with its facilities, these documents turn those ideas into a practical working concept to now enable us to progress the matter to the next important stage.

“The draft of the design brief is now complete and we will be meeting with Waystone and Wakefield MDC in the next few weeks. The next key step is the appointment of a firm of architects and we plan to run a design competition and will be inviting interest from a number of Architects who we would wish to work with. We will be providing each with a copy of the design brief and asking them to provide an outline plan for us to consider, and ultimately select a firm to move forward with.”

Much of the work on the design brief has been done by a stadium steering group recently set up by the club with the objective of introducing people with the appropriate skills to assist us in moving the project forward. The group was formed a month ago and includes locally based developers of residential and industrial properties, David Poulter (the former Tigers Chairman) and Chris Noble, along with the Deputy Director of Estates at Huddersfield University Alan Johnson and the Tigers Human Resources consultant Martin Lea. All are passionate Tigers fans as well as having the ability and knowledge to help the club in this challenging but exciting project. Mark Burns-Williamson, local Councillor for Castleford Central and Glasshoughton has also attended one of the meetings. Representing the Club are Richard Wright and Company Secretary Andy Reed.

Richard said: “The formation of this group was an essential step at this point in the stadium project and having held three meetings in the last few weeks I am confident that we have people who have a range of skills and experience and who can really help us.”

Discussions have also started with a number of organisations who are keen to be involved with the stadium.

Richard said: “The significant investment in construction is only possible if the stadium is a 7 day a week operation and the nature and location of the project is ideal. The facilities and undercroft of the stands provides significant opportunities for businesses and services to be located at the stadium. The superb transport links, the crowds on matchdays and at concerts, the 24,000 square metre business park, and the footfall that the Glasshoughton site already attracts will ensure that organisations and franchises located at the stadium can be successful.”

The Club are keen to reassure fans who have become concerned at the lack of news about the progress of the stadium project.

Richard added: “We are aware and understand that Tigers fans have become concerned at the lack of news about the progress of the stadium project but the Club, Wakefield MDC and Waystone are all committed to the scheme. We all realise how important the new stadium is to the club, but it is important that we get the facilities right first time and deliver a project fit for purpose and within the budget constraints. This is not only in regard to the Super League Licence for 2012 but also to aid the continued growth of the Club to enable us to compete at the highest level and produce a facility with multiple uses.

“The project is also massively important to the community and the local economy. It will create a significant number of jobs, attract more people to the area and provide services to the local community. The benefits of the project are substantial and we have to deliver.”
