Memorials for Fai's passing

THE life of missing Warrior Sonny Fai will be marked with two memorial services in Auckland next week ahead of the new NRL season.
Fai, 20, disappeared on January 4 after rescuing his brother and four cousins at Bethells Beach, west Auckland. Extensive searches of the area failed to find him and he is presumed drowned.

His sister, Lalelei Fai, today said the family had decided it was time to honour him. "We are going through a difficult time, still praying and hoping that Sonny will come back to us,'' she said.

"We haven't given up, but as a family we need to carry on with our lives and Sonny deserves to have his life celebrated in an appropriate way.''

The first service will be at a Samoan Methodist Church in Auckland on Monday. It will be a private ceremony for family, close friends, members of the Warriors and church members.

The second service, at Bethells Beach on Tuesday, will be a public one followed by what Lalelei Fai described as a celebration party. She said the family planned to have a commemorative plaque placed at the beach.

The Warriors, who open their NRL campaign at home against Parramatta on March 14, are preparing their own tribute to Fai on April 5, when they host South Sydney.

Condolences to Sonnys family. Hope that they get through it. Its always hard to get through someones death under such tragic circumstances.

My prayers go out to them.

THE NZ Warriors won their opening NRL game against the Eels tonight in Auckland, giving the home town an extra reason to celebrate Steve Price's 300th game.

The Warriors looked pretty good in this game too. Moon combined with Ropati well to create an extremely potent side of attack for the Warriors with big Manu outside them.
Matulino and Hohaia getting injured is worrying though as they both looked dangerous everytime they touched the ball and big Ben was punishing in defense.
They need Matulino in the back row as a point of difference to their workhouse trio of Luck, Mannering and Lillyman.
It will be interestng to see who Cleary picks to fill the gap, Lauaki, Ukuma Ta'ai, Leeson Ah Mau? or shift one of his props to the back row.
Anyone got Greg Eastwoods number?

Look this is where teams get found out... injuries to 'important players'. For any team to be considered dangerous they need players that can step in an back up. I wish any injured playeer a speedy recovery, but for a teams sake they need depth.

2nd Row is probably the only position the Warriors don't have a lot of depth this year.
They have quality players in all positions playing for the Vulcans or U20's bar 2nd Row.
Maybe Ukuma Ta'ai will step up and become a superstar, I haven't seen him play yet.

NEW Zealand Warriors prodigal son Stacey Jones inspired a dramatic come-from-behind NRL win over Manly, the visitors scoring two tries in the final 11 minutes to cap an epic Brookvale Oval contest.
Winger Denan Kemp's conversion with 26 seconds on the clock was all that separated the two sides after Jones had laid on the final two tries when Manly seemed to have the result in the bag.

In his first game in the NRL since 2005 when he departed for Super League before retiring at the end of 2007, 32-year-old Jones single-handedly dragged the Warriors back into the contest when they trailed 24-16 after 69 minutes.

His chip and chase to set up Brent Tate for his second try was vintage Jones, before he backed it up with another pinpoint kick which eventually found its way to Jerome Ropati to score out wide, Kemp landing the pressure conversion.

Manly looked like they had got their premiership defence off the ground in their first game back at Brookvale Oval since last year's premiership triumph, but the Warriors refused to lie down.

Down 16-10 at the break after the Warriors had run in three tries in a spectacular five minute onslaught midway through the first half, the Sea Eagles reclaimed the lead within nine minutes of the restart via tries to rookie winger Andrew Suniula and rumbling prop Adam Cuthbertson.

Jamie Lyon then looked like he had sealed the match with his second try of the game just before the hour, the former Test centre toeing ahead a spectacular Michael Bani inside ball before winning the race to the ball for a 24-16 lead.

But enter Jones, who started the game on the bench but finished it a hero to leave the Sea Eagles rooted to the foot of the ladder after the opening two rounds.

Well all teams have an off day.

The more worrying thing is the number of injuries that came out of that game. Tate out for the season and now price also out I think with a throat injury.

I am worried that SJ is going to have too much pressure on him to keep that side together... he is a great player, but can only do so much.

Souths will be a tough opponent, they seem to be on fire again... then again...
