TAKE that ... Wendell Sailor celebrates scoring a try for the Dragons against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.
BRONCOS fans will need an early mark from work or resort to battling peak-hour traffic to arrive by a 6.35pm kick-off for the showcase home match against Wayne Bennett's St George Illawarra.
The NRL allocated dates yesterday to the first five rounds of the premiership and Channel 9's favourite team, Brisbane, play four Friday night games, including three at Suncorp Stadium.
Nine's desire to show the first match in which the Broncos play against a Bennett-coached side as the first match of its double-headed telecast in the Sydney market, means the Brisbane kick-off on April 3 has had to be shifted forward an hour from its normal night start. Daylight saving in NSW ends on April 4 -- during the fourth round of the competition.
A request by the Broncos for the NRL to schedule their round 1 game against the Cowboys for Friday night, March 13 was accepted.
A Sunday allocation for the now-customary Queensland derby in the opening round of the season would have meant disruptions to rail work planned for tracks near Milton station on that weekend.
Work on the line will start at 11pm on Friday.
The Titans have a 1pm Sunday start for their round 1 home game against Newcastle.
Brisbane's home games against North Queensland and Melbourne, on March 20, will both be at the customary 7.35 start for Friday night matches and the NRL has retained its scheduling of the visit away to the Sydney Roosters for Good Friday, April 10.
Gold Coast have one Friday night game in the first five rounds, a home match against the Bulldogs on March 27.
North Queensland will play all three home games in that time in the club's preferred Saturday night timeslot.
* Britain's efforts to end a 35-year wait to regain possession of rugby league's Ashes have gained a pound stg. 10.9 million ($23.8 million) increase in government funding.
League leapt over swimming and tennis in a new list of 46 sports which will receive government funding from 2009-13.
League was the third best publicly supported sport, after cricket and rugby union, the Times newspaper reported.
League, derided for generations in London and other major cities as a northern England, working-class code, is aiming to nearly double its total number of players, according to projections from Britain's Rugby Football League.
The RFL hopes to increase the men's participation base from 53,687 to 83,520 as it seeks to attract more players beyond its traditional base.
The Celtic Crusaders, who are coached by Queenslander John Dixon, will take the Super League competition to Wales next year.
* The QRL yesterday gave the green light to Northern Pride to take part in the 2009 Wizard Cup after a review of the club's finances.
