Could this happen. England lose by 10 points to NZ PNG win by 6 points against Australia England out and PNG into the semis! Sowe'd have Australia vs. Fiji/Ireland NZ vs. PNG Who'd a funk it that we'd be in that situation.

I am thinking iof it would have been a faier play to say have
1 and 2 of pool A - automatically qualify for semis. 3 pool A plays winner pool B 4 pool A plays winner pool C
That I think would have given us the 4 best teams in the comp overall.

Thats not a bad idea actually Druzik, obviously hindsight is a wonderful thing, I put forward on another forum that i thought PNG should have got an extra game against what we now know would have been Ireland

I saw on TRL someoen also came up with the same idea... but oh well next time I guess. Though having thought about it, the argument would have been that PNG has lost 3 games where as Ireland/fiji have won one game so is it fair in that respect. ugh... this is much more complicted. But here is another scenario for next world cup. 12 teams, 3 groups of 4. Pool A super group, with Pool B and C with the "minow nations". Now winner Pool A stright through to semis. You then can have three "quarter finals" with 2 Pool A vs. 2 Pool B 1 Pool B vs. 2 Pool C 1 Pool C vs. 3 Pool A I think this would be the best scenario. Though I would make sure that the 4th team in Pool A was a mino... OK some blow out scores would happen but I think that is the best we have. The remaining 5 teams can then go into a 5 way play off where they play teams from the opposite groups and the two top points scorers take out finals spots for a bowl final. So many possibilities.

I have always liked that idea. It would make this format really good and punish England for their poor showings. Hopefully we see that adopted along with 2 more teams for 2013.
