Is that Fitzgibbon comment serious. I cannot believe you just said that. Brings experience and the truth is he puts in a hard game. More deserving to be there than some others. I think Fitzgibbon was very lucky to make it, I doubt he will be in the first choice 17. I think it wouyld have made more sense to put a younger bloke in there just for a bit of top-level experience. Fitzgibbon getting in ahead of Dallas Johnson and Sam Thaiday is not right IMO. Also Josh Perry? he couldn't even make an average NSW side, makes me think the selectors only watched him once this year on GF day.

Thaiday in my opinion.. he's good, but not good enough this year. Josh Perry deserves it too. Experience again. Also this will be the last chance those two have for a proper World Cup.

I reckon Johnson should have been there for sure, I think Thaiday has had a good year and has been one of the form 2nd rowers. Although I think the Incident with the 3 broncos could well have affected the squad, I would have thought Thaiday and Hunt were shoie-ins for the squad.

A few suprising selections and players left out. Lee Gilmour, Peter Fox, Joe Westerman, Michael Shenton, Louis McCarty-Scarsbrook and probably more will feel unlucky to miss out. Pursham, Sykes, Langley and Calderwood all suprising selections.
If Brent Webb didn't get injured before the SL GF I don't think Lee Smith would be there. Had a blinder at fullback and could well take the spot off Wellens for game or two. Looks a good fullback for England's future.
anyway from that squad.
1. P Wellens 2. L Smith 3. M Gleeson 4. K Senior 5. A Gardner 6. L Pryce 7. R Burrow 8. J Graham 9. J Roby 10. J Peacock 11. G Hock 12. G Ellis 13. K Sinfield 14. A Morley 15. M Fa'asavalu 16. J Wilkin 17. D McGuire/M Higham

Its very young, only two players 30+ I think. That could be a good thing or a bad thing really, good because its not the same old stiffs who have struggled to beat Aus for years and bad because this side probably wont know what has hit them when they get that first shot in a Eng/GB v Aus test match and if its close you wonder about experience and cool heads, leading me to Ryan and Jims debate. I think Thaiday and Johnson can think themselves unlucky not to be there, they are better than any of Englands back row options for sure, but Fitzgibbon will be a good experienced old head who, I belive, has already won the World cup once.

Expect 4 of those "domestic" players to drop out too with it being 28 players names there.
I think Fiji placed a lot of their World Cup possibles into Australian lower level clubs at the start of this year to get them more experience.

They already have a fair bit of experience in that pack. But I'd have Thaiday, Johnson, Tupou (who I'm guessing is injured) and Hindmarsh ahead of him and they all have enough experience for this level. But I am happy to see Fitzgibbon and Perry in that squad as they don't exactly strike fear into me, being a NZ supporter.

Ireland squad: Ross Barbour (Carlow Crusaders) Bob Beswick (Widnes) Damien Blanch (Wakefield) Mick Cassidy (Barrow) Ged Corcoran (Sheffield) Lee Doran (Leigh) Liam Finn (Dewsbury) Simon Finnigan (Bradford) Karl Fitzpatrick (Salford) Steve Gibbons (London Skolars) Sean Gleeson (Wakefield) Scott Grix (Wakefield) Gareth Haggerty (Harlequins) Ben Harrison (Warrington) Graham Holroyd (Halifax) Wayne Kerr (London Skolars) Stuart Littler (Salford) Shannon McDonnell (Wests Tigers) Michael McIlorum (Wigan) Eamon O'Carroll (Wigan) Michael Platt (Bradford) Pat Richards (Wigan) Ryan Tandy (Wests Tigers) Brett White (Melbourne Storm)
I haven't seen much of most of these guys this year but I think they'll provide tough opposition for the much hyped Tongan and Samoan teams. I'm really looking forward to this pool.
And does anyone know if they'll have names on their shirts? I'm real keen for a Beswick jersey.

FIJI SQUAD is it just me or are there not too many Fijian domestic players in that squad? "The Fiji Bati World Cup squad was named at their Fund Raising Dinner in Suva on the weekend. Fourteen local players who had overseas contracts this season, along with one local player and thirteen overseas based players were named in a 28-man squad. "

A really poor Australian squad, they have the players to name something much better. A lot of those selections like Campese, Mongahan and williams are horrible. Not a bad NZ squad, I'm pleased Manu got in, he's being playing very well lately.

Samoan squad:
George Carmont David Faiumu Harrison Hansen Ali Lauiti'iti Taualagi Lepupa Kylie Leuluai Wayne McDade Francis Meli Joseph Paulo Frank Puletua Tony Puletua Ben Roberts Tangi Ropati Smith Samau Lagi Setu Terry SeuSeu David Solomona Willie Talau Albert Talipeau Misi Taulapapa Ben Te'o Tupu Ulufale Matt Utai Nigel Vagana
Not as strong as suggested. It would be interesting to see who turned them down and who wasn't selected from names like: Fai, Ah Van, Tony, Sau etc.
