RLEF Announces Rugby League Development Officer in Malta
The Rugby League European Federation has announced the appointment of Anthony Micallef as its Malta Development Officer, further strengthening the game’s growth in Europe.
Micallef, 26, bi-lingual in English and Maltese, will commence the role on September 1st. Under an operational and developmental remit, Micallef’s principal task will be to launch a national Maltese championship, which will commence later this year.
Speaking of the appointment, RLEF executive officer Kevin Rudd said: “This appointment again shows the RLEF's willingness to invest in new territories on a partnership approach to develop RL participation both at a domestic and international level.
“We are always looking for new opportunities and are also currently working with other potential regions to develop.”
RLEF Euro Med Department Director of Development Danny Kazandjian added: “Anthony will provide strong leadership and expertise to a Maltese organization that has already shown itself to be extremely well organized and motivated. Crucially, Anthony’s appointment will see European rugby league gain another all-important club championship, as well as offering the Continent another highly capable national team - stocked by Maltese nationals. I am looking forward to working with Anthony and his board in the coming months.”
The appointment corresponds with a reorganization of the Maltese administration. The two incumbent bodies – the Malta based Kumitat Nazzjonali ta Rugby League f'Malta (2006) and the Sydney based Maltese Rugby League Association (2004) – have been merged to form Malta Rugby League, based in Malta under the auspices of the Kunsill Malti ghall-iSport (Malta Sports Council) and administered by a five-man board.
Commenting on his appointment, Micallef said: “The opportunities in Malta are waiting to be utilised and this opportunity provides an exciting challenge that I’m greatly looking forward to.”

This could well mean we see them in Euro Bowl or Shield next year.
Good news.
