Thread for all things Tonga. Just watching NRL on Fox and they had Feleti Mateo on, I will discuss what he said in a different thread. What interested me though was Jim dymock's ideal Tonga side. So not just a list chucked togther by a random person but the actual side Jim Dymock told them he would like to see come world cup time. Now unfortunatley I ddin't get it written down but I do remember most of it: I have put beside players who have reped NZ in the last 2 years. 1. Talanoa 2. Vuna 3. W Tonga 4. Jennings 5. Vatuvai 6. Mateo 7. Latu (I think) 8. Moi Moi 9. V Anderson 10. 11. Koopu (I think) 12. Lauaki (I think) 13. F Anderson 14. Tuiaki 15. 16. 17. 18. Fa'aso 19. Manufakoa I can't remember the rest right now but they are all NRL/SL players, someone can fill me in if they saw it. I take it he only named 19 to accomodate for the 6 national players. Which reminds me, I heard a fair while back that Tonga may be having a 3 team origin series as a WC trial, NRL based V SL Based V Native Based. Anyone know if this will go ahead?

First I have heard about it... but am not surprised considering the success of the PNG one. If I were in oz, I'd fly over for that!

Hope it goes ahead, gives a good oppurtunity for all, especially the locals to be noticed against quality opposition. I don't think many NRL stars will be invloved as I think they will keep it as even as possible, but when the Tongan domestic comp gets stronger I wouldn't be suprised to see NRL stars in there, hope this continues every year and not just this one. That's if it goes ahead ofcourse

That is most probably against the Australia AS team, the Affiliated states, so WA, NT, VIC and SA.
These states recently had their state of origin series (who won that By the way?!) and then have an austyralian team selectyed by the ARL to do a tour like this. They usually also play the Cook Is and Samoa as well.
I would like to see them tour the Euro countries one day as I think the standard would be pretty even.

This thread seemed a little on the neglected side & since the lads have a huge game this weekend against the tough PNG side at home...here we go;
Go Mate Ma'a Tonga![/color]

You are correct Sel, the Pac cup thread and the PI teams do need to get talked up.
The Tonga PNG game should be the clash of the tournament I think the winner will come out of these two.... though the Cooks and the Fijians can spring some surprises.

Like you said Druz... I'm picking this as the pick of the cup... but PNG, esp at home are tough as nails mate... Anyways, I still have a lot of faith in the boys...
The beauty of this PC is the unpredictability... no one's a safe bet... just look at the Cook Islands result... good for the game and esp for allowing me to stick it to some of my mates lmao!
I know Fiji are really taking the Cooks seriously, but I think their missing J. Hayne and Ashton Simms is a bigger blow then Mate Ma'a Tonga missing the likes of Jennings, Kaufusi, Talanoa and the Paea's... esp Hayne, he was outstanding for them in last years WC... also I hope Willie Manu & Tony "T-rex" Williams play...
Oh well... may the best team win.
ps, just a bit of trivia for ya'll... The Tongan RL team is known as;
"Mate Ma'a Tonga"... which translated means; "Die For Tonga"
Good luck to Feleti & the lads! Peace!

Well done to PNG!
Im just really disappointed for the Mate Ma'a Tonga lads... I hope top stars like Mateo & Fa'aoso stick with em for the long term...
I was really worried that the many stars from the string WC squad did not compete in the PC cup and in the test against NZ... eg; Michael Jennings Tony Williams Antonio Kaufusi Manase Manuokafoa Fetuli Talanoa FuiFui Moimoi Taniela Tuiaki Louis Anderson Fraser Anderson Cooper Vuna Anthony Tupou Willie Manu
I know some of the above mentioned are injured or in the case of Jennings and Fuifui, they were selected for OZ and NZ... but there are reports that some of the players, although keen to play, were not released & allowed by their respective clubs to play for Tonga...
and that sucks!
In no way am I implying that the PNG game result would've been different... but I know Tonga would have had a much better chance @ beating PNG on home soil then the young squad that played on Sun...
I know it's always a hard debate, as @ the end of the day, it's the clubs that pay the stars... but surely the international game has rules for this...

This is something that rugby league suffers on a whole... this happens a lot and in the past even NZ was afflicted by this. I guess this is another arguments for having strong local comps where you dont have to be dependent on "imports"... but either way if its true then that is real dissapointing. Any idea which players this effected?

The only report I read in one of the Tongan news papers was that Manly did not release Tony "T-rex" Williams... but others I've heard of like big Hame Lauaki (who was a real danger man against the Kiwi's) has to fly back to his ESL team after the NZ game... told that by my mate who's his 1st cousin...
One thing though that gets me is the Aussies selecting Michael Jennings, even though he played SOO this year, it looks likely he wont play a game in the 4N... he coould have been real helpful against PNG...
Oh well....

Oh well.... I guess you just have to read between the lines I guess Seluman... also Johnny Sutton where is he? Shouldn't he be playing for Fiji? I havent seen him in the Aussie squad.
