Round 6 1st June, Nis: Palilulac Hammers 10-44 Podbara (HT: 6-16) Red Star v Belgrade University is post-ponned due to students exams an it is going to be played on 30th August.
Round 7 7th June, Novi Sad: Podbara 28-32 Dorcol Spiders (HT: 22-14) 8th June, Belgrade: Red Star 30-20 Palilulac Hammers (HT: 20-4)
The match in Novi Sad was the best match of the competition so far. Podbara was 8 pts ahead until last seven minutes, when one of Spiders' main players was sent-off. Then, they suddenly stopped, obviously thought that everything is finished. Dorcol than scored two converted short-hand tries and won the derby and likely clinched the spot in finals for the seventh consecutive time.
Standings afetr Round 7: 1. Dorcol Spiders 5 (5-0-0) 240-79 (+161) 10 2. Podbara 6 (4-0-2) 196-146 (+50) 8 3. Red Star 5 (2-0-3) 124-174 (-50) 4 4. Belgrade University XIII 4 (1-0-3) 97-140 (-43) 2 5. Palilulac Hammers 6 (1-0-5) 76:194 (-118) 2

Great, things are looking like they are really comming to a nice boil, POdbara and Dorcol obviously the two front runners, but with red star with a "game in hand" they may just pull a rabbit out of the hat in the next few weeks if things go according to plan.
So if the Students game is postponed does that mean the Final will also be postponed until after August?

OK, I promised to send you schedule and here it is:
Round 8: 14th/15th June Round 9: 21st/22nd June Round 10: 23rd/24th August Postponned match: 30th August Final: 6th or 7th September
Because of hard weather during the summer the championships will be interrupted after Round 9 and will be continued at the moment which is good to national teams' interest for final preparations after final match.
If we are talking about the competition, it is obvious that Dorcol is sure for final and the decider about the other will be on June 21st or 22nd, in Round 9, when Podbara travel to Belgrade, to play v Red Star. It is going to be interesting to see how students is going to play at Hammers and at Red Star also, because they beaten Hammers 30 points and lost to Red Star in dying minutes. It is going to be excitement until the end, no matter finalists are almost known.

I wrote you that they give 3 pts for win, 2 for draw and 1 for loss, which is model from RU in many countries, but is practically the same with 2 pts system for win. It is just awarding for playing the match. The problem is that they don't delete from standings those teams which withdraw from the competition.

so who has withdrawn this year? I have seen that a few teams are not very consisten but overall everyone gets a few games in.
I already have found a discrpancy or two on the points standing... but as it is no surprises with Loko and verya being top two.
The Ukranian side at #4 is a pleasant surprise though.

There's an update about Russian championships on Vereya's web-site which became only source of their RL happenings. Druzik, maybe you can form topic about Russian RL championship. Since no-one here don't speak Russian I suppose I'll try to translate what is written here. First stage of their championships is finished with withdrawal of Dynamo Moscow and Nevskaya Zastava St Petersburg, so the rest six team form new stage. Lokomotiv Moscow, Vereya Bears Moscow Oblast, Cosmos Krasnoznamensk, Legion XIII Kharkov Ukraine, Strela Kazan and Cristal Rostov-na-Donu will compete in another round robin on home and away basis. Points from first stage are erased and everyone starts from 0 points. They awarded postponned games from first stage with par forfait scores, i.e. 30-0 for someone. I will post schedule tomorrow.

Serbian National Championships 2008 Round 8 14th June, Nis: Palilulac Hammers 14-18 Belgrade University XIII (HT: 4-4) 15th June, Belgrade: Red Star 38-38 Dorcol Spiders (HT: 12-26)
Students won in Nis and candidated themselves for some greater upset in the rest of competition. Red Star Belgrade avoided defeat versus weakened, but already finalists Dorcol Spiders. Converted try in dying seconds finished their chase during whole match. This point gives them just theoretical chances for spot in Final.
Standings after Round 8: 1. Dorcol Spiders 6 (5-1-0) 278-117 (+161) 11 2. Podbara 6 (4-0-2) 196-146 (+50) 8 3. Red Star 6 (2-1-3) 162:212 (-50) 5 4. Belgrade University XIII 5 (2-0-3) 125:154 (-29) 4 5. Palilulac Hammers 7 (1-0-6) 90:222 (-132) 2

Does that mean a big crowd to watch the game then? That would be great exposure... postponing a match because it actually would help market a sport... now I never.

It was my mistake, that match will be played on 4/5 July weekend. They want to be promoted in Sports Association and have just two home games left, so I think that Red Star want to play there just because of the sign of SA membership. The big crowd would be 200 people, because in Serbia football club (beside Red Star or Partizan) who has more than 1000 people on the stands can be very happy. And one more info: this training pitch has one stand for few thousand people. Here's a clip before the UEFA Cup match 2005/06, when fans attended training session because Red Star FC was banned a match without fans. Walter Zenga, then head coach, proposed the Red Star to use that pitch for their national championships games. The supporters from the clip, will not, o f course, attend the RL matches in that number, but tens of them will be there for sure. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMA7ZmsfObM

So 200 would be a good crowd? hopefully red star can get 200 maybe more. Also which Euro-Med game is being played in Serbia and what crowd would you expect for that game?

It is going to be Russia match, 20th September (I think it's almost sure). I don't know yet where is it going to be played. If Belgrade, we would probably have to promote it well for 500-600 people, but if somewhere in country than more than 1000 is not impossible mission. People in Belgrade, as in every bigger city are spoiled and they are full of sports and other cultural events, but those in the country, don't have too often chance to watch national team in any sport. For example, handball national team played in Nis (second largest city in Serbia) in front of sold hall a week ago. In Belgrade, they wouldn't gather 2000. When Serbain U23s played v BARLA GB U18s in Nis last year, the kick-off was in front of 2000. Later, a lot of them went home when we start loosing but that's the bad side of mentality of the people from the country. Of course, this is on if the weather will be OK.
