Official Rugby League World Cup 2008 Edition #9 - 25/06/2008
KIWIS SHOW THEIR WARES
New Zealand coach Stephen Kearney is confident the Kiwis will be a force in the upcoming World Cup after going down 28-12 to Australia in the recent Test match held at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
"There were some positives to come out of the game against Australia. A number of the younger players showed they can handle that standard of football," said New Zealand coach Stephen Kearney. "Aside from the opening 20 minutes, we matched it with the Australians and it goes well for the World Cup." The Kiwis went into the match under strength following the loss of a number of players through injury including play-maker Benji Marshall as well as the unavailability of players from the English Super League.
With as many as 20 players involved in the northern hemisphere becoming available to play for New Zealand in the World Cup later this year, the Kiwis will be looking at winning their first ever World Cup.
"The English Super League will have finished by then and it will give New Zealand more players to choose from," said World Cup official Tas Baitieri.
"They won the 2005 Tri-Series and will be a force when the World Cup rolls into town."
The quality of players the Kiwis can choose from is enormous.
Those players in England include Shontayne Hape, Alex Chan, Paul Whatuira, Motu Tony, Jake Webster, Clinton Toopi, Ali Lauittii, Jason Cayless, Louis Anderson, Vinnie Anderson and Iafeta Palea'aesina.

LEEDS TO DOMINATE ENGLISH SQUAD
Defending English champions and World Club Challenge Cup winners, Leeds Rhinos, are expected to dominate the English squad when they take on France in Toulouse on June 27.
Depending upon their availability, as many as seven Leeds players could be wearing the English jersey.
Keith Senior, Danny McGuire, Rob Burrow, Jamie Peacock, Gareth Ellis, Kevin Sinfield and Matt Diskin could all force their way into the Test squad as England prepares for the World Cup under the coaching of Australian Tony Smith.
The Rhinos have been dominating the English Super League once again this season and are outright leaders in the competition.
Following the game against France, England will take on Ireland at Headingley in early October before flying out to Australia to compete in the World Cup.
"We have normally given a number of new players the opportunity to play against France but with the World Cup looming, we will be putting our best squad on the park," said England coach Tony Smith.
The French are also expected to field a competitive squad with many of their players to come from Perpignan-based Super League club Catalans Dragons.
"The Catalans Dragons are riding high in the English competition because many of the French players are getting used to playing in a high standard of Rugby League week in, week out," said Baitieri.
"The inclusion of a second French side in the Super League would strengthen the game in France and also make the national game more competitive as they would have a bigger pool of quality players to choose from."

BETHAM KEEN ON PULLING ON BOOTS FOR SAMOA
The Samoans could be boosted by the inclusion of former New Zealand international Monty Betham, who is currently a professional boxer.
Even though Betham has made no official contact with the Rugby League Samoa (RLS), he has told the local press in Samoa that he is keen on putting on the boots for Samoa in the 2008 World Cup tournament.
RLS official Fritz Tuiavii said no one is guaranteed a position in the World Cup squad except for Captain Nigel Vagana.
"All players will be picked on their performance, even our local players. If Monty wants to play its fine but he has to perform and make sure his fitness is up to scratch," said Tuiavii.
"Vagana is at the moment guaranteed because he guided our team in our previous matches, but he still has to maintain his level of fitness" Tuiavii said.
Betham, the son of former New Zealand boxing champion of the same name, represented Samoa in the 2000 World Cup before playing his first Test for New Zealand in 2001.
The hooker appeared in 1001 NRL matches for the Warriors from 1999 until 2005 until heading to England to play with Wakefield Trinity. Betham then hung up his boots to pursue a career in professional boxing.

VIPERS TO BOOST PNG CHANCES
The return of the powerful Port Moresby Vipers will give Papua New Guinea a huge boost after they were re-admitted back to the national SP Cup competition.
The Vipers have been the most successful side in the competition and their success has been reflected in the national team's performances.
"Because many Test players are involved with the Vipers, it is an advantage when they play internationals because they are familiar with each other," said Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League official Jeff Wade.
After years of financial problems, the Vipers are now ready to recapture the title as the most feared team in the competition.
Their differences with the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League have long been forgotten after they aligned themselves with the Australian Rugby League (ARL) during the Super League war while the national body was with the rebel establishment.
Because of their alliance with the ARL, the Port Moresby Viper competed in the Queensland Cup in 1996 and 1997.

IRELAND HOPING TO UNEARTH NEXT CARNEY
The Irish Rugby League will be hoping to unearth the next Brian Carney in this year's Rugby League World Cup.
Carney, who went on to play for Great Britain, began his Rugby League career in the local Irish competition before being snapped up by English club Gateshead.
The Irish Rugby League season kicked-off on May 10 with the Tullamore Nines tournament while the premiership commenced on May 17. Results from the first round: Treaty City Titans 44 beat Portadown Pumas 28; Dublin City Exiles 12 beat hosts Tullamore Knights 8, and Carlow Crusaders 21 overpowered North Dublin Eagles 16.
The Irish are still on the look-out for a number of experienced players to play in the World Cup.
One area that Head Coach Andy Kelly is currently looking at is the opportunity for players with Ireland ancestry to come forward and make themselves known.
Andy Kelly commented, "Having to name a forty man training squad gives me the option to look at players who have not participated in the qualifying games and to consider if they can add strength to the Ireland team - I already have a good core of players and with an 'open door' policy I think players who have missed out through no fault of their own can now come forward and potentially have the chance to play in the World Cup Finals for Ireland".

Either England are playing both Ireland and Wales or the game fell through. I hope both go ahead but I doubt the Ireland game will.

It was going to originally be Ireland but that fell through and Wales stepped up... that match is in Doncaster.
