Like Russia last month there is a good article on RL in Jamaica in RLW this month. Despite the opeing where the writer is saying the WC should be 16 teams because it would be good to have Russia, Usa, Lebanon and Wales there! OK maybe so but it wouldn;t look good when they're playing in front of 5,000 and getting flogged. Alot of interesting stuff in there though, the comp looks likely to go from 6 teamas to 8 next year, they plan to play in holland next year and perhaps most intyeresting of they plan to have an atlantic tournament with USA, South Africa and "possibly some other African nations" held in Jamaica. Oh and they hope to qualify for the next WC... good luck to them. Oh and the best part "The game is going well in the Caribbean. It has a higher profile than Rugby Union at the moment". ;D Yeah i saw that heartening article I thought on the state of the game in the carribean. Richard De la Riviere puts that forward twice though in the mag this month, that he would like to see a 16 team comp but he is talking out his arse, he mentions South Africa, we have just seen SA getting beaten by Amateur english county sides!! the guys a full on tool IMO No offence Rhino or to the SA guys but we all know that this WC would have been a bridge too far for SA, even the quals, this is the best way they could do things for the future. He also bangs on about the USA and Wales.....the same USA that got beat by Samoa by 40+ points and the same USA that got beat by Cumbria 70-0, the same wales that was fairly and squarley beaten by scotland over two legs what a tool he is. He talks about a 16 team comp, the last 16 team comp we had had nominal qualifying, this comp has had qualification comps over 3 continents and has had 20+ teams taking part sorry needed to get that off my chest after I read the mag yesterday

Yeah its been off for a while now . Jamaica were to plat the US in Jamaica in Kingston and then the US got a better deal to play Wales so they cancelled and Wales ended up getting the gig with England . Jamaica have been trying to get it moving again and the USA arent showing any interest. Dont even return their calls or emails . I have been told that some of the higher profile board members can be quite arrogant at times . Sad really . Yeah got an eamil from my Jamaican contact and he said the same thing, shame really. But he did say that they are working on getting an Atlantic cup thing going next year, so that should be interesting who they can get for that.

Salford Reds Boost Jamaican Rugby League
Wednesday 10th February 10
Rugby League continues to grow in Jamaica thanks to English assistance and Salford City Reds are the latest team to have positively impacted the young sport on the island nation.
When the University of the West Indies (UWI) played in their inaugural game on Thursday Feb 5, they donned the strips donated by Salford City Reds and Jamaican Rugby League Association Development Officer, Romeo Monteith was thrilled to see the team playing in the Reds’ strip:
“From the moment the boys saw the kit they were all smiles. None of these guys have played on authentic RL jerseys before and they were exceptionally happy to represent their university in the colours of the Reds,” said Monteith.
“The kit will also be used at the junior level as our aim is to outfit two U19 teams in Kingston”
Having encountered problems securing jerseys for the start of the tournament, the UWI were delighted with the donated kit and will proudly be showing off their new strip for some time.
Monteith continued:
“The connection with Salford is only just beginning and hopefully we will be able to forge a stronger partnership with the club over the coming months and help establish the Reds brand in a new and exciting market.
“We are delighted to have one of the UK Super League clubs assist with our growth and the promotion of the sport.”
Reds CEO David Tarry added:
“The world is becoming increasingly smaller due to new technologies like the internet, face book and twitter etc and it will be interesting to see how these potential new markets develop.
“The club is doing its bit to help with the game development in these areas, along with its work over recent years in the USA. The Jamaican administration team are very enthusiastic and deserve help, we will continue to explore options to promote the club the city and the wider game.
“We have also provided many team kits to many local organisations and schools in the Salford and Manchester areas as part of this initiative via our community team, this is one of our many commitments to grow the game and help our local community.”
