News in the tele today si that david gallop has offered former troubled sharks CEO Tony Zapia a post for PNG. Zapia aparantly lost no support of the rugby league fraternity and is still held in high regard. however, no club wants take the risk of him short term though. this is all the article said, i dont know what his role with PNG will be.

Travel costs will be significant for the PNG gov to fund aswell. It will show how serious they are if they do. didnt Port Moresby Vipers have a team in the QLD cup a few years back, i could be wrong

Good move I feel, shows they are serious and TBH this should be the bare minimum for PNG. This now showcases PNG players to NRL clubs and it should help get more PNG players into NRL.
I'll definatley go to Comets V PNG next year.

Bye bye B mobile bup... this will decimate and ruin their local comp.... I just dont agree on this move.
where will they come up with the $10-15 million to run the franchise? Why cant that kind of money be put back into the local comp and bring its standard uppay the players more and pump it into the commnity with facilities etc...
its a bad move IMHO.

I'd have to say in this situation I agree. That money could vastly improve the local comp, doing the same community benefits as having a franchise would. But look, Central Coast, Perth and PNG and perhaps Southern Orcas are the only guys actually doing anything, so I'd hate to see them not given a franchise with a second Queensland team in. I mean, if there was someone from Queensland being pro-active I wouldn't think that but just based on effort the other franchises deserve it more.

Thats just it, at the moment we really dont know who all the players are. Your right there is no one else looking to do another franchise bid. All we have solidly is Perth and CC... which I would be giving them the next two franchises... even the wellington franchise is quiet ATM so not sure where all these people are coming up with the orcas. look travel and hotel costs will be over $500,000 a year with a PNG bid alone... then a 4.5 million sallary cap... that can go a loooong way to professionalise the B mobile cup.

I don't know enough about domestic rugby league in PNG to comment too much on the effects this may have in PNG but since the (Auckland) Warriors were admitted into the NRL, domestic rugby league in NZ has suffered.
The NRL has become more & more popular in NZ due to a combination of the Warriors, rugby union becoming boring, & obviously rugby league being such an exciting game. BUT all the kids in NZ wanting to play rugby league at the highest level see Australia or Auckland as their only options (as this is where the teams & money are), therefore leaving domestic competitions with the left-overs.
Could the same situation arise in PNG? Would there be enough domestically to keep their juniors or are the NRL & other Australian competitions just going to get stronger while killing off the local PNG clubs.

This is what I've seen on Central Queensland: www.cqnrlbid.com.au/As for Wellington, I'm not too sure what's going on. The WRL boss is trying to organise something but, like last time they bid, it all seems very quiet which probably means they are struggling.

PNG has a very strong local comp the B mobile cup. 8 teams spread rthough the country. on average their games get 3-5000. Its officially semi professional, but I am sure that the money that would go into a Pt Moresby franchise could be better spent paying the players and upgrading the various facilities in PNG.... making it a professional sport.

I think they are very valid points there B, you could certainly say the same about the French Elite comp since Catalan and Toulouses' inclusion into the UK game.

Central Queensland has quite a strong bid in place with alot of money behind it. Would not be suprised one bit to see another bisbane based team bid aswell. FWIW I think Perth and Central Coast will be there in 2013. IMO NZ desperatly needs another team aswell, it's going to hard to fit them in though, if a sydney club relocated to Central Coast then maybe.

a 20 team comp is still viable I think. The current 16 + 2013 - Perth, Central Coast 2016 - Ipswich/2nd Brisbane, Wellington 2019 - Central Queensland, PNG I know the TV contract runs for 5 years but it's too long to wait IMO.
