The first tentative news of the German Rugby league doemstic comp have been sent to me by Simon Cooper. Looks liike there are 6 teams in a one group, not the two like initially throught but the scoring will be done under the Merrit league rules. The first confirmed game and date is Rhineland vs. Rohrbach Hornets, Saturday 31st May. Other scheduled games (no dates yet). Rorhbach Hornets vs. Karlsruhe (Big Local Derby this one) Pfortzheim vs. Rohrbach Hornest Franconian Pigs vs. Bad Reichenhall (Big Bavarian Derby) Bad Reichenhalle vs. Franconian Pigs (Also the Bavarian Derby) Team backgrounds Rhineland, the "Northern" german team, comes from around the Huerth and Cologne area. Rohrbach Hornets are the Heidelberg team and make up many of the National players. The nationsl coach Uwe Jansen also is the Hornets coach. Karlsruhe, is the also a local team close to Heidelberg and will form the central germany derby. This is a new team formed this year but has already tasted RL success with an outstanding win in the Heidelberg 9's! Pforzheim, , a new team I know nothing about. Franconian Pigs, is the Nuremberg team and one of two from Bavaria forming the southern germany area. They also provide some of the forward pack for germany, with Peter Smutna leading the way. Bad Reichenall, Germany's first Rugby League team, This is where inspirational captain Leo burngruber come from and first made up most of the German team but now need to compete for places with Nurenberg and Heidelberg mainly.

Yes, the Gremans this year will be fielding a Germany A and maybe B teams which are like the the U18 and 21 I guess. Many young guys comming up through the Rhineland and Karlsruhe area where the uni's are. There are also about 800 school kids that have taken up the sport in various areas.
So its not much, but getting there. Simon Cooper has a strong emphasis on getting juniors up and comming through the ranks.

You think they can take down Italy and the Czechs this year?

What type of standard is this League at? Also what are the crowds like? At the moment can't say as its their inaugural year for domestic comps. The Heidelberg 9's had a decent standard and the crowd was small, but I think that was more from a lack of promotion than anything. We shall see how it goes. I am hoping to make it out to Huerth for the 31 May game.

You speak german Dan? Maybe try finding some german sports forums and posting on there to try and boost the crowds a bit. What I think an idea would be, not just for germany but for everywhere developing RL would be to get DVD's of the Best NRL, ESL and Origin games so people not too familiar can buy it and check out what the sport is like at the highest level.

The germans do tend to advertise a bit. The serbia game last year had flyers through all the pubs and I saw on at least three occasions students handing out flyers along the main street in Heidelberg. I have already provided RLD with DVD's and videos of various games, SoO, some lower national games, ESL etc, their president hails from Halifax so he knows what needs to be done. Am pretty sure the Si and others already are getting out and promoting on other forums. I speak some german, but pretty scratchy nothing like enough to do a whole post in german... not yet anyway.

So the first game of the German domestic league was played this weekend in Cologne.
Rhineland Warriors (Huerth near Cologne) 40:38 Rohrbach Hornets (Heidelberg).
A close game by all accounts. I am still trying to get info on the table scoring system if its a Merit League systesm or standard rules. This issue is due to the fact that not all teams have the money and means to travel 100's of Km to playe and so may have to play only once.
Still great to see the domestic game finally up and running in Germany! Congrats to all involved.

OK so this years german DC didnt quite work out but spoke with Simon last night and the plans are the weekend of 27th june next year there will be a domestic comp with 4 teams. Munich/bad Reichenhall, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Rhineland (Huerth/Cologne).
Its envisaged to be a cup comp if teams get 13 players or a League if its in 9s format.
